Frances North Obituary

Mrs. Frances Carolyn (Haywood) North, 96, of Mt. Gilead, NC and a long-time resident of Downers Grove, IL and North Myrtle Beach, SC, passed away Friday, April 17, 2009, at Stanly Regional Medical Center in Albemarle, NC. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 27, 2009, at Edwards Funeral Home in Mt. Gilead. Interment will follow in Sharon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Monday at Edwards Funeral Home. Frances was born May 7, 1912 in Steeles Township, Richmond County, NC, a daughter of the late Martin Luther and Mary Ballard Haywood. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Robert North; one son, Peter North; five brothers, George, M.L., Wyatt, Guy, and Bill Haywood; and one sister, Marjorie Rogers. Frances graduated from the New Charlotte Sanatorium School of Nursing in 1933 and became a Registered Nurse. She served on active duty as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps from 1943-1949, including tours of duty to the Philippines and Japan, and continued to serve as an Army Reserve Commissioned Officer through 1953. Frances was a past president and lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include one son, John North and wife Peggy of Fair Play, SC; one brother, Raymond Haywood of Mt. Gilead; two sisters, Molly Rogers of Ft. Pierce, FL and Joyce Covington of Rutherfordton, NC; and two grandchildren, Hayley and Dylan North.
