Frances Milow Obituary
Frances V. Milow, born November 8, 1915 in Stoughton, WI, Fran passed away on August 20, 2011 at St. Patrick's Residence in Naperville, IL after a short illness. Fran was a longtime resident of Western Springs, Illinois. Fran was an avid bridge player, golfer, and bowler. She also was a very good cook, a wonderful hostess, and a great lover of life. Fran served in various positions in both the Western Springs Woman's Club and the Western Springs First Congregational Church Women's Society. She participated in the National Women's Political Caucus and the Western Springs League of Women Voters. She was a member of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, and the LaGrange Country Club. Fran also was a Friend of the Thomas Ford Library of Western Springs. Fran taught Sunday School for 6 years, and later served as an assistant teacher (and honorary "Grandma") for preschoolers at the Western Springs First Congregational Church. She spent several years as an arts and crafts volunteer in the Pediatrics Department at Hinsdale Hospital. Fran also had been a Girl Scout Leader for 6 years when her family lived in Pennsylvania. Fran was an Elementary School Teacher, teaching 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades at Westmont and Darien Public Schools from 1962-73. During World War II, Fran worked as an interviewer for the U.S. Civil Service Commission in Chicago and, prior to that, she worked as a secretary to the Sears Roebuck Co. Personnel Director in Chicago. Fran earned a B.A. in Economics and History at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1938. By 1961 she had decided to become a teacher and started taking prerequisite courses at North Central College in Naperville, IL, prior to attending Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL, where she obtained a Masters Degree in Elementary Education in 1970. Fran was the beloved wife of the late Robert W. Milow and the loving mother of Sally Milow and Patti Milow. She also was the beloved and loving aunt, great aunt and great-great aunt of many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are to gather on Saturday, September 17th for an 11:00 a.m. memorial service at the: First Congregational Church of Western Springs, 1106 Chestnut Street, Western Springs, Illinois 60558.
