Not a day passes that I think of Ernie and the other boys from the Illinois Free Trappers. There is a painting by artist John Clymer titled " Alouette" of Mountain Men in a winter camp. That painting sums up our friendship. Happy Trails my friend.

Not a week passes that something clicks and Ernie is remembered, perhaps a qoute from a movie, maybe a song, or just a memory. In the last few years Ernie has been joined by friends from the Illinois Free Trappers, the blackpowder gun club we belonged to. We were, to say the least, a "band of brothers', all interested in our Early American History and the love of the outdoors. Until we meet again old friend....

I met Ernie Schirmer on a dry dusty September afternoon in 1978 at The Illinois Free Trappers Fall Rendezvous near Morris Illinois. We both joined IFT within minutes of each other and formed a bond and friendship lasting 39 years. Ernie was always there for you, a kind word, a bit of paternal wisdom, and always something to laugh about. God Bless you Old Scout. You are truly missed.
