Elaine Sommerfield nee Varda, age 74, passed away on February 6, 2018.
Elaine was born in Chicago, IL on November 23, 1943. She lived most of her youth in Lyons, IL and settled in LaGrange, IL in 1978. Elaine was truly wonderful, caring person. Beloved wife of Jay, whom she married on August 22, 1965, mother of Kevin, grandmother of Kiera Jaye Sommerfield.
She attended Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois and graduated in 1965 with a degree in education. She also earned two master's degrees, one in administration and one in early childhood special education. Elaine was devoted to teaching. In addition to teaching in Berwyn, Lyons, Bolingbrook Illinois, she also opened and taught in two preschools: North Riverside Park District and Mary Queen of Heaven in Cicero. Elaine's hobbies were reading, sewing, listening to music, and dancing. She was active member of the Salt Creek Chapter of the American Association of the University Women (AAUW), Red Hats, West Suburban Dance Club, and First Presbyterian Church of Lagrange Women's Club.
Survived by Jay Sommerfield, Kevin Sommerfield, Kiera Sommerfield.
Predeceased by daughter-in-law, Tara Dirst.
A memorial service will be held at a later time.
