Eileen Dyer Obituary

"She always enjoyed the walk" A story about a lovely elderly lady named Eileen Perhaps over the years you have seen her walking up and down Prairie Ave, or Warren Ave, or to Jewel/Osco, or even quietly visiting shops in downtown Downers, or stopping for coffee at Caribou. She would typically be wearing an oversized hat, baggier clothes, a heavy wool coat and scarf, carrying multiple bags of heavy items that slowed her pace. Many of you offered her rides. Many even took time to stop and chat with her. Many of you may have just been curious about who this cute little old lady was walking all about Downers Grove, perhaps if she was even lonely and safe? Please know she was deeply loved and cared for by her family. Daughter to John and Mary Dyer. Sister to Diane, Sister-in-law to Don, Marianne, and Tom. Aunt to Kathy and Neil, Dan and Kerri, John and Debra, Michelle and Jim, Steve and Marilyn, Brian and Kevin. Great Aunt to Tommy and Tracy, Timmy and Megan, Derek, Kiel and Caitlin, Jimmy, Victoria, Katie Rose and Joe, Lindsay, Danny, Olivia, Ruby, Brandon, Maya and Eli. Eileen was a staple figure in our family. She was simple yet special. She was frugal but generous. She was hard working but always cheerful. She had opinions but never judged. She was independent but loved to serve her family. She was humble with deep faith. Eileen spent most of her life in the city, but in recent years grew to embrace Downers Grove as her home, and spent much of each day walking to and from. This past Friday, while walking home from downtown, Eileen suffered a devastating stroke. We wish to thank the passerby's who stopped to help her, covered her with blankets, called for help, and even came to contact her family. Sadly, on Saturday afternoon Eileen past into peace. With many family at her side, surrounded in tears, she left us with many wonderful and funny memories. Certainly we remember "She always enjoyed the walk." Eileen Dyer 8/11/33-11/24/2012. Interment was Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at St. Mary Cemetery, Evergreen Park. I was so saddened to see this obit in the paper yesterday. Yes, I saw her walking almost daily and once stopped to speak with her briefly. I am glad to hear she was so loved; yes, I did wonder about that. :) I will greatly miss seeing her in our neighborhood. My sympathies to your family.

I live on Prairie near Main St so often saw Eileen walking with her shopping bags to/from town. I didn't know anything about her but admired her spunk and her seeming dedication to a daily walk. Your obituary is one of the lovliest tributes I have ever read. And I was glad to know more about this obviously-loved walking woman! So sorry for your loss. I'll miss seeing her!

She deserved so much more gratitude than she would have ever let herself receive. She also helped create an amazing family whose members should be proud of themselves.

You taught me so much about the kind of person I can be. Thanks for everything, Eileen. Love you always.

I just would like to say that I always saw Eileen walking down Prairie or Wilson and she always brought a smile to my face when I saw her. I saw her just last week. I offered her a ride once when it was very cold and icy (and i was worried about her )but she turned me down :) It was after that when I realized that she was out there enjoying her life with those walks. So sorry for your loss.
