Edward Scharres Obituary

Edward "Ed" H. Scharres, age 88, passed away May 10, 2008, at Manor Care in Hinsdale, IL. Born in Chicago, Ed was a resident of Clarendon Hills, IL, since the early 1950s. Ed served his country during World War II, joining the Army in early 1943. He was assigned to the Oak Ridge (Tennessee) Atomic Bomb Project where he performed a variety of highly skilled technical work for which he received official commendations. He attended the University of Illinois at Champaign earning a Bachelor's degree in Engineering in 1949. His early employment was with General Electric in Schenectady, New York. For more than 25 years he was employed by Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute where some of his projects included design work for NASA. Among Ed's many interests were skiing, photography, travel, classical and folk music, and projects in his well-equipped home shop. Ed is survived by his sister-in-law Pauline nee Gregorich Scharres, niece Barbara, nephews and nieces-in-law, John (Bonnie) nee O'Neill, Mark (Nancy) nee McCoy. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Martha nee Busse, and his three brothers, John, Francis and Harry. Visitation will be Sat. May 24th, at 9:30 a.m. until time of funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame Church, Chicago Ave. and Norfolk in Clarendon Hills, IL, 60514. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery, Evergreen Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in his name to the Alzheimer's Association for Research, 225 N. Michigan Ave, #1700, Chicago, IL 60601. Arrangements by Gibbons-Elliston Funeral Home.
