Dorothy Cofer Obituary

SMITHFIELD - Dorothy Dean "Deana" McEnerney Cofer, 87, passed away Friday, Oct. 28, 2005. A native of Surry County, Va., Deana had been a Smithfield resident most of her life. She was the daughter of the late J. Wesley and Susie Dean Little McEnerney. Dorothy will be best remembered as the co-owner/operator of Cofer's Market in Smithfield and Cofer's Grocery in Spring Grove, Va., along with her husband, the late George Thomas Cofer Sr. Deana was affectionately known as "Nanny" and was a member of Mill Swamp Baptist Church, Ivor. In addition to her parents, and her husband, Deana is preceded in death by a brother, Clyde McEnerney. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, George T. Cofer Jr. and his wife, June, of Surry, Dorothy C. Lewis, and her husband, Ron, of Richmond, and William A. Cofer Sr., and his wife, Joanne, of Ivor; a sister, Peggy M. Kitchen; brothers, J.W. McEnerney and Gene McEnerney; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A graveside funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, in Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Roger D. Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, in Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield. The family suggests memorials to the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 97, Smithfield, VA 23430 or the American Cancer Society, IOW Chapter, c/o Lois R. Little, PO Box 659, Smithfield, VA 23431-0659. Arrangements are in the care of Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield.
