Doris Martha Urban

Doris Martha Urban passed away peacefully at age 90 on January 13, 2020 at Brookdale Burr Ridge, Burr Ridge, Illinois.

She was born and raised in Downers Grove, IL, daughter of the late John and Mary Andrews, and her only sister, the late Frances Andrews Moulton. She is survived by her son, John (Carol) Urban of AZ, her daughter, Debra (Gary) Buzzell of CA, and her son, Steven, (Suzanne) Urban of VA and 4 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Doris truly loved living in Downers Grove having lived all of her life within a four block radius of the home where she was born. She graduated from Downers Grove Community High School in the Class of 1947. She met the love of her life, Edwin Urban, on the softball fields of Grant Park, married him, and shared 64 wonderful years together until his passing in 2012. Together they raised three wonderful children.

In her early days of marriage, she worked swing shift in the machine shop at Schafer Bearing, Rex Chain- belt, later named Rex Nord, and later worked for over 20 years in the order processing department at Kennametal, Inc.

Some of her favorite interests were reading, gardening, cooking, being outdoors and sharing fun times with friends and family at home, and at their home away from home in Woodhaven Lakes, Sublette, IL. The grandchildren especially have fond memories of swimming and fishing with her at Woodhaven Lakes. She and Edwin also enjoyed travelling to visit their children living out of state, and even out of the country, as far as Germany, though home was truly where her heart was. You could count on her to always celebrate the holidays and keep up all the family traditions. She was a strong supporter of many charities including many veteran groups and all kinds of medical research companies, but her heart really melted when it came to any charity supporting the protection and care for animals.

Her zest for life gave her the inner strength to overcome many difficult medical diagnoses over the years. Her lovely smile and light-hearted spirit, love, and caring for family and friends will always be remembered. Some of our best memories were made during her last six months at the skilled nursing facility when it became abundantly clear that her communications had become quite "unfiltered" much to the delight and chagrin of her fellow companions, staff, and family. The laughter and joy she brought to this world will be sorely missed.
