Doris Hyland-Carlson Obituary

Hyland-Carlson, Doris Age 96 (for the last 20+ years, Doris, when asked, the question how old are you? She would always respond '102'). Born in Buffalo, Minnesota, Doris was a 50+ year resident of Golden Valley. In 1919, when Doris was three years old, her mother, Jenny died leaving Simon, her father, a single parent with three young daughters - Mildred Lindstrom, Ruth Thorness and Doris. Simon later married Josephine Enghauser who had two sons, Paul and John. She was preceded in death by her parents: Simon and Jenny; her step-mother: Josephine Enghauser Nelson; her siblings: Mildred Lindstrom, Ruth Thorness, Paul and John Enghauser; and husbands: William B. Hyland and Reynold A. Carlson. Doris was a lifelong volunteer, (i.e. Girl Scouts, Golden Valley Lionettes/ Women's Club, and her beloved Courage Center). Of all of these, she found her time (30+ years) with people at Courage Center the most inspiring, rewarding and fun. She was a FUN mother and instilled in her children the importance of enjoying life and having FUN. She was complicit at times in helping her daughters play hooky from school or work, if the sun was out, the weather warm and there was a possibility of an adventure or a trip to the cabin. She loved her winter escapes to Naples and her summer trips to Spider Lake, Corcoran and River with family and friends. She believed that prayer, a smile, exercise and a positive spirit were the keys to a good life and to overcoming just about any ache or pain. We cannot remember her without smiling. Doris is survived by her daughters: Peggy (Chet Seviola), Maradee (Bare Girt), Pat (Chris Hawver), Kathy (Mark Bauer), Chrissy (Bob Lamson); grandchildren: Cathy Lee Seviola, Lori Wheatcraft (Todd Wheatcraft), Bill Bauer, Robert Girt, Jessi Bauer, WB and Trevor Hawver; great-grandchildren: Riley and Ian Wheatcraft; many other relatives/friends, her friends and neighbors at Calvary church and apartments and family members of the four-legged variety. Her celebration of life is postponed until spring arrives and the sun can shine down on all. In the meantime: do an act of kindness, have a glass of wine, tour a nursery, do some yard work, weed a flower bed, take a walk, volunteer a bit, and think of Doris with happy thoughts. In lieu of flowers, remembrances of her life can be made to Courage Center - 3915 Golden Valley Road --- Golden Valley, Minnesota 55422.

As I hope you all know; your mom was very well loved by not only all of you but by many of us. I will always remember her with a smile on my face. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful tribute to your mom with this obituary. Now I realize why she always told me to leave work and go "kick up my heels". She embraced life and wanted all of us to realize it's too short; enjoy it before you can't. I will so miss her at CCA, more than you all may know. God bless each and every one of you girls. She loved each of you so much, which we could tell everytime she would talk about you. And I know you all loved her. I'm so very grateful to have known her; she is an amazing lady and that will and has lived on through all of you. Take care ladies and please keep in touch.

To the family of Doris,
My thoughts are with you at this time. I knew Doris from my many years of involvement at Courage Center and she was truly an inspiration to many. May your memories of Doris always be a blessing for you.
