Died: January 20, 2025 in Grand Rapids, MI
Donald Lee Cothern, age 92, of Grand Rapids, MI, and formerly of Western Springs, IL, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 20, 2025.
Born in Pana, IL, on April 29, 1932, Don was the son of the late Ralph and Mae Cothern. He graduated from Pana High School in 1950 and in 1952 enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He married Carolyn Ryan on July 11, 1954, and upon discharge from military service in 1956, enrolled at Eastern Illinois University where he graduated with a BS in Business Administration. He moved to the greater Chicago area in the late 1950's and worked in the real estate departments of the Chicago and North Western, Burlington Northern, and Illinois Central Gulf railroads for over 40 years.
After retiring Don volunteered at Hinsdale Hospital for over 20 years. He enjoyed playing golf and was a lifelong fan of the Cubs and the Fighting Illini.
He is survived by sons Philip (Theresa) of New York, NY, and Gregg (Susan) of Grand Rapids, MI; grandchildren Elizabeth (Chris) and Samuel of New York, NY, and Maxwell (Marisa) of Chicago, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and sisters, Lois, Betty and Wanda.
Interment will be private at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL. A celebration of life open house will be held on May 17 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm at the Hillgrove Tap, 800 Hillgrove Ave., Western Springs, IL, 60558.
