Dennis Fox Obituary

Dennis J. Fox, age 78, U.S. Army Veteran. Beloved husband of 55 years to Monique Cecile Fox; loving father of Daniel Fox and David (Nina) Fox; dear brother of Joan (G. William) Hrobsky; fond uncle of Julie Hrobsky and Steven Hrobsky; dear brother-in-law of Myriam Prudhomme, Bernadette Jounneau, Odile Nicaise, Francoise (Yves) Tabourier, Chantal Prudhomme. Visitation Thursday 9:30am until time of Funeral Mass 11:00am at Divine Savior Church, 6700 Main Street, Downers Grove. Interment Private. In lieu of flowers, masses are appreciated. Dennis was born on December 9, 1930, in Beaver Dam, the son of Henry J. and Mayme B. (Jezyk) Fox. He graduated from Beaver Dam High School in 1947 and from Wayland Junior College in 1949. In June, 1951 he received the degree of Bachelor of Science in journalism from the University of Wisconsin, with senior high honors and election to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society, and was awarded a Kemper K. Knapp law scholarship to the University of Wisconsin School of Law. In August, 1952 he was drafted into the army and trained as a Signal Corps cryptographer. He was assigned to Fontainebleau, France, at that time the headquarters of the NATO land forces for central Europe. There he met a French cryptographer, Monique Cecile Prudhomme, and on August 18, 1954, they were married in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in her home town of Dinan, in the province of Brittany. The wedding was a major event for the town, whose residents still remembered gratefully the liberation of Dinan on August 14, 1944, by General George Patton's third army. Upon his discharge from the army Dennis returned to the University of Wisconsin and received his Juris Doctor degree in June, 1957. Thereafter he worked as an attorney in IRS legal offices in Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Miami. In 1971 he was assigned to the IRS headquarters in Washington, where he became the assistant director, then director, of the IRS Tax Court Litigation Division, and later Associate Chief Counsel for tax litigation. In January, 1979 he was transferred to Chicago as the Regional Counsel in charge of the IRS legal offices in the nine states comprising the IRS' Midwest Region, including Wisconsin and Illinois. He retired from the IRS in June, 1986, and joined the Chicago law firm of Lord, Bissell and Brook, where he remained in active practice of tax law until January, 2002. Even after his retirement his firm kept his office available for him. Dennis was a member of the bars of the United States Supreme Court, Court of Federal Claims, United States Tax Court, Ohio Supreme Court, Illinois Supreme Court, and three United States District Courts. He was also a member of the American and Chicago Bar Associations. Arrangements by Adams-Winterfield & Sullivan Funeral Home, Downers Grove. 630-968-1000 or www.adamswinterfieldsullivan.com

Monique,
It was my privilege to work with Dennis from 1977 to 1986, particularly the last year when he was my immediate supervisor. Not only was he brilliant, with the best memory of anyone I have known, he was kind, non-judgemental, a listener, and had a wonderful sense of humor. I was very saddened today to learn of his passing. Please accept my condolences.
