Hard to believe it has been 9 years. I miss Dave! My best to Janet and the girls.

Dear Janet and daughters,

Uncle Dave was a favorite of mine. My earliest childhood memories were of him playing the bass fiddle, having a great sense of humor and introducing us to new words like "reprobate". My brothers and I knew we screwed up when Uncle Dave labeled us that.

I will miss the long phone calls early on Saturday mornings with him. Dave was fortunate because he loved his work at Argonne and dedicated his life to it.

I'd like to think we had a special bond as the Tolle family redheads.

He will always be in my heart.

Dear Jan and daughters,

Uncle Dave was a favorite of mine. Early childhood memories were of him playing the bass fiddle, having a great sense of humor and introducing us to unique words like "reprobate". My brothers and I knew we were in trouble when we heard that word from Uncle Dave.

Through the years we stayed close and enjoyed long phone calls early on Saturday mornings. I like to think he and I had a special bond as redheads.

He will always be in my heart.

We have had the good fortune to live next door to Dave and Janet since we moved to Lemont in 1983. We could not ask for better neighbors-friendly, considerate and always willing to help in time of need. We will miss Dave very much.

Dear Janet, Kristina, and Rebecca,

Sue and I will be there Saturday. but in case we don't get to talk, or I forget to say some things, I wanted to share my thoughts about Dave with you. I came to the lab as a fairly young vet, with no experience in research. I was replacing Dr. Poole, who had been at the lab for many years, and had worked with Dave for over 25 years. More than anyone, Dave and Bill Keenan became my mentors, and taught me the research game. I would not be a full time, board-certified laboratory animal veterinarian if Dave and Bill had not been in my life. I was taught clinical pathology in veterinary school, but I really learned clinical pathology from Dave. I'm certain you know - Dave was one of the smartest scientists I have ever worked with, yet he still was one of the nicest humans ever - very much NOT in the tradition of scientists! Working with Dave and Bill, along with others who Dave trained (like Sue Cullen/Meyers, Don Doyle, Lynda Pippin/Lanning, and many other students) and others who had great relationships with the entire Argonne "family" - like Rich Santarelli, Everette Staffeldt, Betty Jean Wright, Carol Fox, Don LeBuis, Bill Eisler, Jane Perrin, Harold Gaines and Louise Kaspar- and, of course, Tom Fritz - who Dave and I LOVED to argue with - all of this made the years 1983-1991, when I worked with Dave full time, among the best years of my life. I remember Dave diving into our little swimming pool in our house in Worth; he was the life of our summer party - and then coming to the Christmas parties at our house in Palos Heights in more recent years. I remember the good Dad that Dave was - how he borrowed my old beater Corolla to drive a couple of summers so that one of the girls (was it Kristina or Rebecca?) had a car to drive. Most of all, I remember that Dave was a good friend to everyone, who made it fun to come to work. I think Dave was actually the pivotal figure at the lab, who, more than anyone, was responsible for the accomplishments of the animal side of the research we all worked on, because all of the work included Dave's clinical pathology. He will be greatly missed as a scientist, and as a friend.
