David L. Grant
David L. Grant, age 76, of Woodridge, IL, passed away the morning of March 26, 2023 at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL. He was born in Chicago, IL on June 3, 1946 to Laurence Charles and Blanche Vodak Grant. He is survived by his wife, Vada Ann Peterson, whom he married on August 18, 1973 at the Burbank Manor Presbyterian Church in Burbank, IL. Further surviving are one daughter, Mandy (Ryan) Corbett of Wheaton, IL and one son, Michael (Sara) Grant of Brookfield, IL; grandchildren, Brendan and Justin Corbett, Lauren and Ethan Grant, and Camryn Kleebauer; one sister, Linda (John) Courts of La Grange, IL and sister-in-law, June Gorman of Woodridge, IL; nieces and nephews, Julie Scheidegger, Jennifer, Kathie, Tim Courts, and Aaron Sellers; and numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents as well as their brothers and sisters.
David was a 1964 graduate of Reavis High School in Oak Lawn, IL, and a 1968 and 1970 graduate of the Illinois Institute of Technology, graduating with an M.A. in Rehabilitation Counseling. He held several positions in the State of Illinois Department of Human Services, retiring in 2006, after 37 years of service, and holding the position of Chief, Survey Section, Bureau of Accreditation, Licensure and Certification for mental health and disabilities facilities.
David had an outstanding academic record in high school and appeared on television as one of three students representing Reavis High School on the program "It's Academic." He was a member of the National Honor Society, performed with the concert band, playing clarinet, and was a member of the basketball and golf teams. In college, he teamed with his friend Richard Montanelli, and the two played bridge in clubs throughout the area. At some point in his early life, he became a Chicago Bears fan and remained so through the good seasons and the bad. As a youngster, David rode public transportation to attend as many White Sox games as he could afford.
David was a proud and involved parent, actively participating in all of his children's activities, as well as donating his time to park district programs and high school athletics. After his children graduated from high school, he ran the timing system for Downers Grove North Boys and Girls Swim Teams, retiring after 25 years. David enjoyed counted cross-stitch, reading, traveling, Broadway in Chicago, and golf. With his wife and friends Rick and Dale Montanelli, the foursome spent a week each summer golfing in Minnesota. One of his cross-stitch pieces won "Best in Show-Christmas" at the DeKalb County Fair. He was a loving husband and was very proud of his marriage, eagerly looking forward to celebrating fifty years of marriage together with Vada this August. On occasion, Vada was asked what made her fall in love with this tall, lanky scholar from the Southside. Her response was, "It's simple. He loved his mother, he was kind to animals, he had read the Bible twice, and he had 13 pins for perfect attendance at Sunday School."
