Daniel Hartigan Obituary

Daniel V. Hartigan, 79, a life-long Wheaton resident, passed away Monday, March 30, 2009 at home, surrounded by his family. He was born November 15, 1929 and graduated from Wheaton Community High School in 1949. Dan was dedicated to his country, his community and his family. He served in the Army National Guard. He spent 20 years as a Wheaton police officer, retiring in 1979. During this time, he received numerous awards for his precision gun skills. He also was widely commended for helping those in need, including rescuing a woman and her son from their burning home. His second career, with the Wheaton Park District, kept him busy working outdoors until his retirement in 1995. He and his wife Judith (nee Klein) were together for 54 loving years. He was a devoted father to Sally (Daniel) Maier, Thomas (Ellen), Paul (Cathy) and Patrick (Rosalyn). His seven grandchildren, Stephanie, Eric, Daniel, Mary, Sean, Molly and Ayla adored him and could always count on their Grandpa for treats. He will be missed by his brother Alfred (Fran), and sisters Dorothy Stadther and Mary Lou Shrader, his many nieces and nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph, as well as his parents and six brothers and sisters. A memorial mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at St. John the Baptist Chapel in Winfield. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to CNS Hospice, 690 E. North Ave, Carol Stream, IL 60188 or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Williams-Woodward Funeral Home, West Chicago, 630-231-1300.
