Cyril Saroyan Obituary

Cyril M. Saroyan Passed away April 3, 2006 in Greenbrae, CA. Born Sept. 11, 1911 in Fresno, CA to Pepron and Moushegh Saroyan on L St. in Little Armenia. Attended Emerson and Longfellow schools and graduated from Fresno Tech. Received his BA degree from Stanford Univ. and graduated from Hastings College of the Law in 1937. Was principal counsel for the State Public Utilities Commission for 30 years. Predeceased by sisters, Lillian Simmons and Freda S. La Shay, and brother, Suren M. Saroyan. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Roxanna Kavoian Saroyan; nieces, Dian Karabian, Doris Rodrigo, and Helen Hultman; and five devoted nephews. He was a lover of gourmet dining, fine wines, good books, opera and was passionate about his Armenian heritage, spoke the language fluently his entire life. He was brilliant, entertaining, a true raconteur. He leaves many friends and colleagues. So many of the maitre's in SF knew him by name. His dapper looks often were mistaken for Arthur Fiedler, the noted conductor. Herb Caen, the columnist, often recognized him in his column along with his cousin, William Saroyan, when both were in their prime. At his request there will be no funeral. Interment will be in May at Aararat Cemetery in Fresno, CA. Remembrances may be sent to Krouzian Zekarian Armenian School, 825 Brotherhood Way, S.F. 94132, or the charity of your choice.

Memories of Cy--mine are all pleasant-he was always upbeat and jolly in the office, ready to tell you a humorous or evocative story or report of an event. he was an enthusiastic advocate for the ratepayers, and i recall him being a master of operating the xerox machine, always ready to help me when it so frequently failed to perform.
