Clara Morrow Obituary

"> Clara F. Morrow
Clara F. Morrow, 98, of Allentown, passed away Thursday, November 1, 2007, at her residence in Country Meadows, Allentown. She was the wife of the late John E. Morrow of Allentown. Born in New York City on July 7, 1909, she was the daughter of Jennie (Simonton) Frank Grey and Albert Frank. She attended the public schools of New York and later a post high school experience in 1927 at Barnard School for Girls, New York City. Her experiences as a young person during Prohibition were remarkable. As a young woman, she was employed by Morgan Guaranty Trust Company. She moved to Allentown in 1948. She was a lifelong resident of Midway Manor. Active in many bridge clubs in Allentown, she enjoyed playing bridge until her death. She was passionate in her efforts to make life more meaningful for people with visual and mental challenges. She helped found the Lehigh Valley Association for Retarded Children and was its second president in the early 1950s, and was also active for many years in the National Chapter of ARC. Last December, she was honored at the VIA All-Star Basketball Banquet as a founding member of VIA. She reminisced that she had raised $10,000 in 1950 to found VIA by going door-to-door, quite an accomplishment in 1950. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her distant relative, Cyrus Butrick, was a colonel on General Washingtons staff in the American Revolution. She was a member at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Allentown. She will be lovingly missed by her family, sister, Dorothy Frank of Allentown, sons, Stephen Morrow and his wife Lesley of Allentown, and John E. Morrow Jr., who resides with his brother in Allentown, three grandchildren, Jason Morrow of Bethlehem, Peter Morrow and his wife Rachael of Annapolis Md., and Susan Morrow of Allentown, nephew, Gerald Morrow, M.D., and his wife Zoyla, of Bethlehem, niece, Jane Morrow of Bethlehem, and nephew, Daniel and his wife Linda of Wyndmoor. Services: 7 p.m. Sunday, November 4, Trexler Funeral Home, 1625 Highland St., Allentown. Call 6-7 p.m. Sunday. Burial Monday, Woodlawn Cemetery, New York. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 845 Wyoming St., Allentown, PA 18103 and VIA of the Lehigh Valley, 336 W. Spruce St., Bethlehem, PA 18018.

From the moment I met Clara nearly 35 years ago, she was "family" and to my children she is "Grandma Clara." She was a remarkable woman of vitality, wit and no-nonsense but graceful candor. She soldiered on as the head of a household of challenges and her 98 years is a testament to "that which makes you stronger." I hope to have as a life as long and full as Clara's.

Steve, my sister called me this afternoon and informed me of the loss of your mother. I spoke with her last Christmas and she sounded so good. From my family here in Texas to your entire family, our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I am deeply sorry to hear of Clara's death. She was a wonderful lady and I shall miss her. I played bridge with her at Country Meadows. She will be greatly missed by all her friends here and everywhere who knew and loved her. My prayers are with her two sons and daughter-in-law and grandchildren. My deepest sympathy to all the Morrow family. Sincerely,
Alice B. Billie
