Charles Eggerstedt Obituary

Charles John Eggerstedt III, MD
Born: May 30, 1939 in Berwyn, IL
Died: October 17, 2023 in Clackamas, OR
Charles John Eggerstedt III, MD, age 84, died peacefully at his home in Clackamas, Oregon on October 17, 2023. Charles (Chuck) was born in Berwyn, IL on May 30, 1939, and grew up in nearby Stickney, IL, attending Haley Elementary School, Morton High School, Morton Junior College, and the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, after which he attended the University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago, earning his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1964. After serving an internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, he enlisted in the US Army as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps, serving much of his time in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star.
After his discharge from the Army in November 1970, Charles pursued postgraduate medical training in Ventura, California and then returned to Vietnam as a civilian with the Volunteer Physicians for Vietnam Program, to participate in humanitarian service to provincial hospitals. Over the course of his medical career, Charles practiced emergency medicine in a number of locations including Eureka, CA, Martinez, CA, and Miami, FL, where he met his spouse, Victor Garcia. They were together for 48 years; married in Vancouver, WA in 2013, and settled in Clackamas, Oregon for retirement. Charles enjoyed travel, classical music, cinema, and was a voracious reader. Always the "quiet iconoclast", he enjoyed discussion and debate about conventional traditions & philosophies.
He is preceded in death by his father Charles John Eggerstedt, Sr. and mother Barbara Barcal Eggerstedt. He is survived by his husband, Victor Garcia, his sisters Carole (Robert) Shoptaw and Jane (Donna Burrell) Eggerstedt, MD, his brother Paul (Victoria) Eggerstedt, as well as nieces Natalie Shoptaw, Mary Shoptaw, Katie Eggerstedt Roberts, nephew Michael Eggerstedt, MD, great-nephews Seamus and Kenyon Begley, Peter Eggerstedt, Cole Roberts, and great-niece Claire Roberts.

Charlie and I met at Morton HS and remained friends for 60ish years. There was a 20-year disconnect in that time, but I´m glad we "relocated" each other in 2007. I can recall the days in HS playing poor tennis and bad miniature golf but having a lot of fun doing it.

While we never did have the opportunity to get together in person these last 15 years, his friendship via emails were a blessing. We enjoyed exchanging travel experiences; seeing many of the same places, but not doing them together.
My condolences to Vic and his family. I will miss Charlie, as he was a good guy and friend. May he rest in peace.
