Carol Wandschneider Obituary

Carol Wendell Wandschneider

Born: August 30, 1944

Died: February 5, 2020

For 75 years Carol Wendell Wandschneider shared a determined, droll and independent spirit with her family and community. Her legacy upon passing on February 5, 2020 is the impact of her efforts to ensure that every person who lived and worked and died in Downers Grove would be remembered for generations to come.

Born August 30, 1944 in Hinsdale, Illinois to Pauline and Fritz Wandschneider, Carol was raised with her sister Pauline (Wandschneider) Buchanan in Downers Grove, where her mother founded the Downers Grove Historical Society in the 1960s.

A member of St. Andrews Church from birth, she graduated first from Downers Grove High School (now North High), then from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. Following a long career in food service, she returned to her hometown and spent 17 years as a prominent community volunteer and avid archivist of the lives lived in Downers Grove.

Carol understood both the importance and the limitations of stone and paper to preserve people's memories. Though she was a traditionalist in many ways, she embraced new technology to make sure that future generations were able to find Downers Grove ancestors and friends in the digital age. She digitally preserved a collection of 50,000 photographs, inventoried both Oak Hill and Oak Crest Cemeteries, and indexed all the obituaries and marriages in the Downers Grove Reporter (now Suburban Life) since 1892. She also indexed the photographs of students, faculty and staff at both high schools in town. Not long before she passed, she was digitally indexing all the old Downers Grove phone directories and dutifully replied to research requests submitted to the Downers Grove Historical Society website.

Her dedication to community extended to serving on numerous boards and committees, notably those of the Downers Grove Historical Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution Downers Grove Chapter, the Huguenut Society of Illlinois and the Archive Committee at St. Andrew's Church.

Carol's attention to detail and commitment to service manifested in everyday ways with her family, always accompanied by her acerbic wit. She never failed to mail a greeting card to her sister, niece Carlye W. (Buchanan) Dooley and nephew James Duncan (J.D.) Buchanan Jr. for every occasion even Halloween. Each year she asked her family to stuff her stocking with toiletries for the homeless veterans for whom she knitted hats and scarves. And she enjoyed attending her sister's neighborhood New Year's Eve parties in costume - one year as Queen Victoria (the widow) when the theme was “famous pairs.

Carol's family will celebrate her legacy at a memorial in Downers Grove to be held in the Spring of 2020, date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Downers Grove Historical Society -PO Box 663, Downers Grove, IL 60515. (www.DownersGrovehistory.org) or to St. Andrews Episcopal Church at 1125 Franklin St, Downers Grove, IL 60515.

Carol was invaluable to our recolonized Sigma Kappa chapter (1975) at the University of Illinois. She was so very knowledgeable and also patient with us as we learned our way. She helped to steer and guide us, while not stifling the spirit of those of us in leadership positions. She loved Sigma Kappa which was evident in her loyalty and commitment to our chapter and the national sorority. She helped us when we had problems - and always had our back. She was sincere and shared in the joy of our sisterhood. I was not in touch with Carol after graduation, but know that she had a significant influence on me and others during those important college years. I am remembering her bright smile, and I am grateful for the privilege to have known her.

Carol was in my pledge class and we shared many classes in Bevier Hall as Home Ec majors as well. I remember her as such a hard worker but also as someone with a saucy, droll sense of humor whose coMpany I always enjoyed. Carol has gone too soon. Memory Eternal!

Carol cut to the chase and got things done. As a recolonization chapter, we were independent thinkers unencumbered by the reality that others who had come before knew more than we did. Carol could typically say five words and suddenly wed get it! She was the best OOAK (one of a kind) ever...

Carol was a wonderful sorority sister of mine. Sigma Kappa has truly lost an outstanding woman. Not only was she an asset to our Chicago Alumnae Chapter, but she was an important member and advisor to Theta Chapter at the University of Illinois. We shared many fun times together at alumnae meetings. Her love of family and service to her community will be remembered by many.

Carol was a dear Sigma Kappa sister who was so influential in our Chapter development. We always exchanged Christmas cards. I will miss her. Please let me know when the memorial is.
