Carl Smith Obituary

Carl E. Smith, age 83 of Downers Grove, IL, died peacefully on Friday, October 14, 2011. He was the beloved husband of Mary Ann; loving father of Sandra (Peter) Nelson and C. Steven Smith; loving grandfather of C. Edward Siwula, Katherine Nelson and Matthew Nelson. He was the cherished brother-in-law of Caroline (Jerome) Ulane, Margaret (Darrell) Andresiunas, Tony (Christine) Lee and Grace (Richard) Rothrock. He was a dear uncle of nine and great uncle of 12. Carl was born in Newark, Ohio and was a graduate of The Ohio State University. He served in the U.S. Navy in 1946 on the battleship Colorado and in 1950-52 on the battleship New Jersey. He taught at Downers Grove South High School for several years and had a long career with the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Rehab Specialist, Counselor and Chief of Vocational Rehabilitation & Counseling. He retired from the V.A. in 1989. Visitation Wednesday, October 19th, 3:00pm to 8:30pm at Adams-Winterfield & Sullivan Funeral Home, 4343 Main St. (1 blk. So. of Ogden Ave.), Downers Grove. Visitation Thursday, October 20th 9:30am until time of Service 10:00 am at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 4501 Main Street, Downers Grove. Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
