Andrew Welborn Obituary

Andrew C. "Andy" Welborn, age 67, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, formerly of East Dundee and Woodridge, died suddenly on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Andy was born on March 13, 1944 in Vanderburgh County, Indiana. Consistent with his ambitious and impatient nature, his parents, Paul and Elizabeth (Calvert) Welborn were on their way to Welborn Hospital in Evansville, Indiana when Andy decided to be born. They stopped by his Grandmother and Grandfather Calvert's home for the birth. Andy grew up on the family farm one mile from Cynthiana, Indiana and because of his father's challenges with multiple sclerosis and his ambitious nature, planted his first entire corn crop single-handedly with a two row planter at the age of twelve. As a boy, he also bred and sold fox terriers to help out with finances. He graduated from North Posey High School in Poseyville, Indiana in 1962 and from Purdue University in 1966. He married Janet Dean Melton a native of Evansville, Indiana on September 4,1965 and after graduation from Purdue he accepted a position with Sears, Roebuck and Co. as an executive trainee. Following the completion of his basic training and active duty with the National Guard, he began his career at the Sears store in Evansville, Indiana. In 1969, he was recruited to a position with Sears Headquarters in Chicago, Illinois in 1969. While in Chicago, he always aspired to be a national buyer. He accomplished his goal in 1977 when he was assigned to buy riding lawnmowers, after serving as an assistant buyer for lawn and garden tools. Subsequently, he was assigned to pliers and screwdrivers, where he built his reputation as "Mr. Craftsman" after making a huge splash in the tool market with the Robo Grip pliers. In 1992, he began buying mechanics' hand tools and subsequently was in charge of product development for all Sears Craftsman tools until his retirement in 2001. His retirement was spent doing all the things he truly loved. After the death of their beloved Mathew, he and Jan became snowbirds, dividing their time between the places they loved the most, South Florida and Door County, Wisconsin. He never missed an opportunity to go fishing, wherever he was. Most important, however, was entertaining and visiting friends and family all across the country. They were the light of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Elizabeth Welborn and a son, Mathew Ross Welborn. He is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Jan; his son, Aaron (Jane) Welborn and grandchildren, Jillian and Jaden of Apple Valley, Minnesota and his son, Jay (Christine) Welborn and granddaughter, Madelyn of Bolingbrook, Illinois. He is also survived by his only sibling, Anne Smith of Huntingburg, Indiana and niece, Susan (Kyle) Largent of Vancouver, Washington, and great niece, Emily (Matthew) Largent Donovan and great nephew, Elliott, and nephew, Mark (Victoria) Williams of Portland, Oregon and great nieces, Denali and Violet. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the Miller Funeral Home, 504 W. Main St., West Dundee, Illinois. The Rev. Nancy H. Nyberg will officiate. Burial will follow in the Dundee Twp. East Cemetery, East Dundee. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM. Memorials donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. On August 20, a "Celebration of Life" service will be held at the Maritime Museum, 120 N. Madison Avenue in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, beginning at 6:00 PM. For those planning to attend an RSVP may be sent to [email protected]

My very belated condolences. I did a search for Andy this morning after having dreamt of him 2 nights ago. I was heartbroken to read of his passing. Andy was not only my boss and my mentor but more importantly he was my friend. We spent years working together, though I was his assistant he treated me as an equal and always gave opportunities and responsibilities. All that I am I owe to him. We spent years commuting on the Burlington together and we used that time to talk about everything except work. Our paths moved in different directions after we moved to Hoffman Estates but we maintained our friendship. God has welcomed Andy with open arms.

Andy meant everything to me and as my boss, taught me more than I can ever express. There will never be another like him and I will miss him so much.

Please accept our deepest sympathy on the loss of Andy. Although it was many years ago we still have very fond memories of our visits to Florida when Andy was the buyer and I worked for Roper Corp. The times our families spent together will always be a part of our life.
Sincerely

Jan, Aaron, Jay and Anne... We are so sad to hear about Andy's death and cannot imagine the grief you all are going through. I have many fond memories of Andy, one of which was him teaching me to drive a stick shift and how he was so kind and patient with his pesky cousin... You all are in our thoughts and prayers. Love... Dear Welborn Family -- I transferred into the Sears headquarters back in 1980 and like so many before and after me had the great fortune of working with Andy Welborn. I found him to be one of the real gems. Clearly he had great merchandising skills but his wonderful demeanor and guiding/caring behavior was so encouraging and motivating to a young buyer want-to-be like myself. He was a terrific role model to pattern from.
I enjoyed every conversation with Andy and will always remember his strong yet gentle voice. My sincere condolences

Dear Jan and Family.... We were all so sorry to hear of Andy's passing. He was a friend and I always felt so good about having Andy take over the Mechanics Tool Line at Sears when I retired. Many of us spent our careers building the Craftsman Franchise, and loyal, diligent leadership were a necessity in an ever increasing competitive market. Andy was just the right man for the job.

We will miss him, and express our condolences to you and your family. Unfortunately, we will be out of town with previous commitments and will not be able to attend the funeral services.

With love and prayers for you all,

Jerry and Bob Fuzak
