Anastasia Filtch Obituary

Anastasia Filtch (Abdo) December 22, 2010 Anastasia "Yia-Yia" at the age of 87 left us on Wednesday to be with her Lord; her daughter, Georgette Abdo; and her other loved ones who have already made the journey. Anastasia passed away peacefully with her son Gregory Abdo and his wife Nancy at her side. Also present were her grandchildren and their spouses, Elizabeth (Abdo) Sapio and Kevin Sapio, and Jonathan and Alicia Abdo. She is also survived and will be heartbreakingly missed by her great-grandchildren, Samantha (5) and Ryan (10 mos.) Sapio and Nathan (11) and Kyle (10) Abdo. Anastasia supported and raised her two children, Georgette and Gregory, by working at Central Plating Co. for several years. After that she worked at Community General Hospital, and while working for the hospital she took on a second job at the Onondaga County War Memorial. She worked in the box office with ticket sales during the period of the Syracuse Nats NBA team. She was then asked to design and manage the box office for the new Onondaga County Civic Center, where she remained for 20 years. She retired to care for her daughter, ailing from cancer. After Georgette's passing in 1993, Anastasia returned to work as a receptionist for Catholic Charities on Onondaga Blvd. until permanently retiring in 2008 at the age of 85. St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church is where she regularly attended and lent her beautiful singing voice to the choir. She lived her life as an inspiration to others to live their lives with love and compassion for all God's children. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 325 Waring Rd., Syracuse, NY. Contributions may be made to Catholic Charities, 1654 West Onondaga Street, Syracuse, NY 13204.

Greg, Nancy and family, I just heard the sad news about your mother's passing. I worked and became a good friend with your sister Georgette. I have often thought about all of you through the years. I am so saddened by the news of your mom. Your mother was an amazing woman. I know Georgette and her have each other now. God Bless all of you.

Anastasia: I never realized when we spoke a little over a week ago that it would be my last conversation with you. Both Ken and I are so blessed to have been a part of your life. Your support and encouragement have helped us so much and I will miss you terribly. I close my eyes and picture you surrounded by loved ones. Georgette and Magic are right by your side and you have a beautiful and peaceful smile on your lovely face. My heart goes out to Gregory, Nancy and all your family. I celebrate you my dear friend. Thank you for being strong and brave and for sharing your joyful soul with me. Love Pat

Stasia was a dear dear woman and it was a great pleasure knowing her and working with her at the Civic Center. How fortunate to run into her this year and be able to greet her after so many years! Just learned of her passing and this is written with a heavy heart. Stasia touched many lives with her compassion and warmth. We were fortunate to be in that company. Dan Wooley & Mary Lou Frantz

Dearest Greg, Nancy and Family,
Stacia is one of my life's fondest memories. Her love and devotion to family was an inspiration to all who knew her. Our boys, which she watched grow up, adored her. We spent many hours together in the years we worked at the Civic Center Theaters. Our friendship was close, we were able to share our happiest and most challenging times with one another, a relationship that I will always cherish and celebrate.
God's blessing on you all. Bob, Edie, Joe and Tom.

To the family of Anastasia,
I'm very sorry to hear of her passing. I worked with Georgette at Grimshaw and she became a good friend to me. When she became sick I had the pleasure of spending some time with your Yia-Yia. What a warm, caring, beautiful person she was.
I was in Georgette's former classroom reminiscing and speaking to a co-worker a week ago about Georgette and Anastasia's special bond and how lucky I was to have spent time with them. Please don't be sad, because I know that Georgette and Anastasia will pick up where they left off all those years ago. God Bless you all!

To the Family,
I worked with "Stacia" for many, many years at Community-General. A great person who had the most life affirming outlook of anyone I've met. She rarely, if ever, complained about anything. I am celebrating her life, right now. Peace to all.

Greg, Nancy and family,
I was so saddened to hear of my Stasia's passing. She was so much more than a boss to me, she was my second mother. I have so many wonderful memories of this wonderful graceful woman. She was definitely one in a million and I will always cherish my memories of her and all the fun we had together. She taught me how to laugh especially at myself. I will miss her and hold all my memories of her close to my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

It's been approximately 30 yrs since I first had the pleasure of meeting this most kind & gracious lady. She was always so helpful to my aunt in numerous ways. Since I spoke with her by phone only six days ago, it was a shock to me to find out today that she had been called to her Heavenly Home. Greg & Nancy - I hope you will be able to take comfort in knowing that so many people sincerely cared about, & loved your mom. This beautiful lady of grace and dignity gave kindness and comfort to others. I will pray that she now rests in the peace she so richly deserves and that our Lord will mercifully bless you with the strength and comfort that you will need during this difficult time.

Greg and Family,

I had the pleasure of meeting Anastasia shortly after my wife and I moved into her neighborhood last year. One morning on my way to work I noticed her attempting to retrieve her blue bin from the bottom of her sloped driveway in the pouring rain. I stopped to offer my assistance and she was the most appreciative that any person could be. From then on I always looked forward to helping her just because it made her so happy. I am truly sad to see her go.

I knew Anastasia while I was attending SU, 50 years ago. I worked for the Syracuse Nats part-time, where I got to know Anastasia. She was a welcoming, gracious, and helpful woman. She and Jerry made quite a team in the ticket office. I haven't seen her since.

I know she will be missed by her family and friends. My sincerest condolences to all those who loved this fine lady.
