Frank Thomas Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

Frank Thomas, Jr., 90, passed away October 7, 2007 at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Frank wishes to be remembered foremost as an adoring husband and veteran of the United States Army. A native of Pennsylvania, he enlisted in January 1941. S/Sgt. Thomas was a platoon leader of Company K, 23rd Inf., 2nd Infantry Division. His "Indianhead" division stormed bloody Omaha Beach on D-Day+1, the beginning of the Normandy Campaign. Attacking across the Aure River, the Division liberated Trevieres and proceeded to assault and secure Hill 192, the key enemy strongpoint on the road to the French town of St. Lo. After the hill was taken, S/Sgt. Thomas was critically wounded in action while defending the town of St. Lo on July 26, 1944. Life for Frank after WWII was spent in Tampa, Florida, where he and his wife enjoyed dancing, gardening and traveling. In 1996, they relocated to Peachtree City, Georgia. Mr. Thomas was a proud member of the Second Indian Head Division Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949, Disabled American Veterans and Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Frank is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Anne B. Thomas; devoted daughter, Sondra Phares Tushek and son-in-law, Gordon Tushek, all of Peachtree City; sister, Mary Mizwinski of Taylor, PA; sister, Margaret Conner of Sebastian, FL; four grandsons in Tennessee and several nieces and nephews. Our family is grateful to the Department of Veterans Affairs for 60 years of assistance to Frank and recently the care of the NHCU, doctors, nurses and staff at the Medical Center in Decatur. Frank will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with military honors on October 30, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, any memorial gifts in Frank's memory may be made to the Second Indian Head Division Association Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 460, Buda, TX 78610. "Second to None", the U.S. Army's 2nd Infantry Division is currently serving in Korea and Iraq. Dear Aunt Anne, Cousin Sondra, and family,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Uncle Frank. I never had the honor of meeting Frank, but have a childhood memory of a photograph of a handsome gentleman standing next to our beautiful Auntie Anne, in front of "the Sondra Lee" (remember her?). My prayers are with you all at this time.

Dear Aunt Anne, Cousin Sondra and family;

I am saddened to hear of Uncle Frank's passing with the regret of not having been able to see him. I still have the fondest memories of my trip to Florida when I was in college and spending time with everyone.

Life is far too short. My Mom and I have just agreed to making a trip your way next year, since it is long overdue. I will continue to keep you all in my prayers and send you each a heartfelt embrace.

Respectfully,

Daniel and Isela Silvas
