I worked with Al at GEPL years ago and he was a gem! I am so sorry to hear of his passing. You are a lucky family to have had him as your very own.

Please accept my apologies for being unable to attend Alfred's funeral. It was an honor being asked to be a pall bearer. Over the summer of 2009, it was my distinct pleasure to get to know your Dad. I made it one of my goals for the summer to pick his brain. With nearly a century of accumulated wisdom and experiences ranging from Armistice Day in Mississippi ("I was very young but I was shocked at how much whiskey there was. Whiskey and Guns...") to the Influenza of the 1920's ("we had to leave my mother at a hospital in Illinois as we headed south for Louisiana...") to shady land dealings ("we got to the land in Louisiana and discovered that it was covered in stumps, we probably paid too much for it...") to riding the rails ("I just got off at the last stop... Land O' Lakes"), to his various business ventures in DuPage county ("I poured the cement for that building... the foundation was the only thing on that lot that was ever up to code!").
Most of all, though, I will miss Alfred's laugh. At times, certainly, it stemmed from confusion. I realize that. Ultimately, though, I think that his laughter came from a remarkable and eternal soul that was truly at peace with the world. It was clear to me that he liked the weather, he loved his family, and he read everything he got his hands on, not because he was a simple man but because he knew the important things in life are immaterial. That's wisdom. That's Alfred.
God Bless you all and please send my love to the Mansfield family, particularly Marian.
I hope they serve baked beans in heaven.
Love,
Ellen Huxtable

Dear Mansfield Family:
Please accept our sincere condolences and prayers in memory of your father, Alfred. Tom and I met him on several occasions and, of course, at Michael and Amanda's wedding. It was a pleasure to see both parents celebrate their long married lives together. May you remember all the good times and happiness you shared with your family.

To all of Mr. Mansfields family,
I just want to express my condolences for the loss of Alfred. I did not know him very long, having only worked with him for the last few weeks of his life. In that time, though, I met a man with a remarkable existance. He did things that I can only imagine doing and through it all had a family that anyone would be proud of. My one major regret though, was that I didn't meet him sooner. The short time that I was able to care for him will be something that will always be remembered. Again, my deepest of sympathies for your loss.
Sincerely,
James Aherin
