Eugene Sanders Obituary



SANDERS

Eugene Newton Sanders "Newt" of Burlington died Friday, October 12, 2012 at 86 years young. Born and raised in Sanders, KY, Newt loved farming and especially horses. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps in August 1944 and was with the 1st Marine Division on Okinawa. He married Ella Joan Schirmer in October 1946 and was happily married for 66 years. Mr. Sanders was a 50+ year member of Erlanger United Methodist Church. Newt retired from the US Postal Service January 1985 and spent the next 20 years traveling all over Europe, taking many friends and family on guided tours. He is a member of the 1st Marine Division Association and a huge fan of Kentucky Basketball. Newt is preceded in death by his wife, Joan and daughter, Darla Gay. He leaves behind a son, Barry Steven of LaGrange, KY and a granddaughter, Melissa Barnett and great grandson, William Barnett both of Charleston, SC, and a sister, Rebecca Lowrance of Louisville, KY. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, with a funeral service to follow on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at the Erlanger United Methodist Church, 31 Commonwealth Ave., Erlanger, KY. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Military Honors. Remembrance donations are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice or Hosparus of Louisville. We loved Newt so much and admired him as a loving Uncle. Newt was always gentle and kind with everyone. We loved hearing about his travels and experiences in life. Newt will be surely missed. We enjoyed listening to all his stories about growing up in Sanders when we visited Aunt Rosie.
