Ethel Glendenin Obituary

Crystal Lake, IL. - Ethel Long Glendenin, wife of Lawrence E. Glendenin, both long time residents of Downers Grove, IL., died in her Crystal Lake home on July 22, 2010. She was 88 years old. Ethel Glendenin was born in 1921 in Norma, Tennessee. She was one of ten children born to Flora E. and William M. Long. She graduated from high school in Oneida, TN in 1940. From 1941 to 1945 Ethel worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, formerly Clinton Laboratory, in Oak Ridge, TN. In 1944, while working in the Classified Files/Records Section of the Library of the Clinton Laboratory as part of the Manhattan Project, she met her future husband, Lawrence, a chemist also assigned to the Project. They were married in 1945. Ethel received a certificate from the United States of America War Department, Army Service Forces-Corps of Engineers for her work essential to the production of the Atomic bomb, contributing to the successful conclusion of World War II. Ethel and Lawrence moved to Illinois in 1949 where Dr. Lawrence Glendenin began a 40 year career at Argonne National Laboratory. In 1966, Ethel began training in the field of cytotechnology at McCormick Laboratory, Hinsdale, IL. She acquired her license and worked as a Cytotechnologist at Hinsdale Hospital, Hinsdale, IL from 1968 - 1975 and LaGrange Hospital, LaGrange, IL from 1975 to retirement in 1983. Ethel Glendenin is survived by daughters Patricia Malon (Wayne), Ballwin, MO., Lorrie Bollinger (Jeffrey), Harvard, MA., son Charles Glendenin (Janet), Algonquin, IL., 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Ethel was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Lawrence, son David, and son-in-laws Wayne Malon and Jeffrey Bollinger.
