Richard Formo Obituary

Richard "Dicky" Formo died peacefully in Napa, California, on January 8, 2026, after a life he often described as blessed and full. A metal fabricator and welder by trade and a builder at heart, Richard created many things throughout his life-including his first boat, a Piver 24' Nugget trimaran. He completed and launched the trimaran in Santa Cruz in 1969, beginning years of memorable adventures sailing up and down the California coast and throughout the San Francisco Bay.

Richard found joy in simple pleasures: tending his garden, cheering on the Warriors and 49ers, savoring kippered snacks, and listening to all kinds of music. He will be fondly remembered for playing his harmonica, sharing Werther's and See's candies, dancing whenever the moment called for it, and delivering an endless supply of "Dad Jokes." Above all, Richard's life was marked by his deep love for Jesus and his family-a steady thread woven through both the easy and the difficult seasons of his life.

Born in Billings, Montana, in 1940 to William and Dorothy (Spring) Formo, Richard was the third of ten close-knit siblings. The family later moved to Portland, Oregon, where he attended grammar school, and in 1957 relocated to San Francisco to help operate his aunt's flower shop in the Mission District. Richard graduated from the former Polytechnic High School in San Francisco and went on to live in several California communities-including La Honda, Redwood City, San Diego, and Santa Cruz-before settling in Napa in the late 1970s.

Richard is survived by his daughters, Leisa and Kim (Matt), and their daughters; six siblings-Gary, Linda, Eileen, Gunda, James, and Kathy-and their families; as well as many additional relatives and friends who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dorothy; his former wife, Maria; and siblings William, Marilyn, and David.

A celebration of Richard's life will be held on February 12, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Tulocay Funeral Home. Donations in his honor may be made to Share the Care Napa Valley (www.sharethecarenv.org, Tax ID #81-5288335).
