Jerald Remy Obituary

Jerald C. Remy, age 93 of Belleville, Wisc. passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at Skaalen Nursing and Rehab Center in Stoughton, Wisc. He was born on October 22, 1932 in Madison, Wisc.-the son of Vernon and Lillian (Moen) Remy. Jerry graduated from Madison West High School in 1950 and continued his education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating in 1954. While at the UW, Jerry was one of six cheerleaders chosen to represent the Badgers at the 1953 Rose Bowl. After college, he served as a Lieutenant in the United States Army, 2nd "Indianhead" Division, based at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Wash. from 1954 to 1956. He was a member of the Belleville American Legion Duppler-Smith Post #460.

After leaving the Service, Jerry worked at a landscape company and at several local greenhouses where he cultivated his lifelong love of gardening, always taking pride in his many flower and vegetable gardens. On January 26, 1963, he was united in marriage to Yvonne Genin at St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church in Belleville. He worked for Jefferson Fire Supply as a salesperson/service tech and Capital Steel as a purchasing agent, before joining Auto Glass Specialists in 1972 as a purchasing agent. He retired from AGS in 1999 as the Vice President of Purchasing.

Jerry was very active in his retirement and rarely sat still for long. He managed St. Raphael's Frenchtown Cemetery as the sexton, a role he held since 1968, as well as working as a sales rep for Archie Monuments. He was always committed to volunteerism and held many roles including; Boy Scouts of America Troop 61 committee leader, Treasurer and founding member of the Belleville Kiwanis, member of the Friends of the Belleville Library, President and founding member of the Belleville Area Historical Society, founding member and board member on the Belleville Area Cultural Foundation, involved with the Wisconsin State Historical Society, and church council member of St. Mary of Lourdes/St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Churches. Jerry also delivered Meals-on-Wheels for the Belleville Senior Center for many years and served as a founding member on the BHS Wildcat Wall of Fame committee. He had many varied lifelong hobbies and interests including a love of nature (birdwatching, hiking, and hunting), was an accomplished amateur painter and winemaker, and an avid reader, usually having two or three books going at once.

Jerry had a love of history and historical research and was a founding member of the Dane County Historical Society, serving on its board for decades. He was a driving force behind many of the DCHS historical markers posted throughout Dane County, having written and proofread many of them. Jerry was instrumental in the rebuilding of the gazebo and fountain in Belleville's Library Park, original landmarks that had been previously removed. His hobbies included a deep interest in genealogy, tracking his family history back to the 1400's in Europe. He was very proud of his French and Norwegian heritage and his local family roots tracing back to 1850's Belleville. If you needed to know anything about local history or Frenchtown genealogy, Jerry would be the one to contact. He had a love of traveling, visiting all 50 states during his lifetime, and enjoying many trips to several locations around the world with Yvonne. Jerry cherished his family, especially his grandsons, taking an interest in their activities and accomplishments, attending their music, sporting, and academic events.

Jerry was the guy you saw at church dinners delivering meals or selling tickets or at almost any community event where there were volunteers ...always with a pleasant smile. He had a very big heart and leaves a large footprint.
