Raymond Clifford Carpenter
Raymond Clifford Carpenter, 94, a lifelong Portage, IN resident, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, after a long and well lived life.
Ray was a wonderful human being-generous, giving, and truly the life of the party. His warmth, humor, and kindness drew people in, and he never met a stranger. Those who knew him felt welcomed, and cared for in his presence.
Ray began his long life in Georgia on October 1, 1931. He was one of 13 children and was known for his hijinks growing up.
After high school, he joined the Army. A proud veteran of the Korean War, Ray served his country with honor. He received a National Defense Service Medal, the Army of Occupation (Germany) Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a longtime member of the American Legion, where he cherished the fellowship of fellow veterans and continued his commitment to service.
Ray dedicated 50 years of his working life to U.S. Steel, retiring after decades of hard work, loyalty, and pride in a job well done.
He was also a devoted Master Mason and achieved his 50th year award, living out the principles of integrity, brotherhood, and service that the organization represents.
Above all else, Ray was devoted to his family. He said of all the things he did in his life, his proudest moments were when his three daughters were born. His steady presence, joyful spirit, and generous heart leave a legacy of love, laughter, and kindness that will live on through all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Ray was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary, his second wife, Carol, and stepson, Joe. He is survived by his daughters, Bonnie Lynn, Anita, and Lisa; his grandchildren, Apollo, Amber, James, and Ian; and his sister, Ada who he fondly called "Tater." Also step-children, Julie, Jeri, and Jeffrey, and step-grandchildren.
Loved by all who knew him, he will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Visitation for Ray will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Edmonds and Evans Funeral Home, 6941 Central Avenue, Portage. A Masonic service will be held at 6:30 p.m. prior to the end of visitation.
An American Legion service will be held the following day at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at the funeral home, followed by a religious service where Pastor Scott Jones will be officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Portage.
