Ronald James Obituary

Lakeville - Ronald James, age 88 of Northfield, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, January 2, 2026, at SuiteLiving in Lakeville. Ron was born March 18, 1937, grew up in Waterloo, Iowa later attending Luther College. He received his masters degree in music from the University of Michigan and his doctorate of education philosophy from the University of Toledo. He was a band director, principal, and superintendent of schools. He spent 19 years as the superintendent of schools in Randolph, Minnesota later becoming an adjunct professor at St. Mary's College after his retirement. Ron's passion for education was only surpassed by his love of music. He was a jazz musician performing as early as high school. Later in life he was reunited with his band mates from Luther College where they formed the group Classic Jazz. He was an avid fisherman, devoted to St. John's Lutheran Church in Northfield, Minnesota, and a brilliant intellect. Ron's greatest love was his wife Carol marrying her August 26, 1961 sharing 61 years together. That love was showered on their three children: Jody Paulsen (Stephen), Amy Shanaa (Ali), and Daniel James (Jamie). They had 5 grandchildren: Jody and Stephen's daughters Alyssa (Mitchell) and Madeleine (Timothy); and Amy and Ali's daughters Amira (Tanner), Sabrine, and Safiya. They also had 4 great grandchildren: Mason and Millie (parents Alyssa and Mitchell), and Lewis and Caroline (parents Madeleine and Timothy). Ron's unwavering love and support for his family is his lasting legacy making him a true patriarch. He is preceded in death by his wife (Carol James), his daughter (Amy Shanaa), father (Otis James), and mother (Myrtle James). He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. A Celebration of Ron's Life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 16, 2026, at St. John's Lutheran Church of Northfield. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the services from 1-2 PM.
