Richard Stedman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Plummer Funeral Home - Augusta on Jan. 26, 2026.
AUGUSTA-Richard (Dick) Paul Stedman, 78, passed away on January 21, 2026 at his residence. He was born on January 14, 1948, a son of Arthur and Evelyn (Dorr) Stedman.

Richard grew up in Waterville and was a graduate of Waterville High School in the class of 1966. He went on to enlist in the United States Navy and served for two years before his honorable discharge in 1968.

After his military service, Richard launched a career with the Maine Department of Transportation that spanned an impressive 38 years. Until his retirement in 2007, he spent countless hours "on the road," traversing the state from southern to northern Maine. A true automotive enthusiast, Richard had a deep appreciation for cars and always took pride in the latest features of every model he owned.

Richard was a master of the "long-distance prank," famously tracking down greeting cards with musical chips or the legendary joker greeting "endless" cards that would loop a high-pitched birthday song for hours. He was an avid reader who "devoured" everything from historical non-fiction to modern thrillers.

He was predeceased by his parents, and a brother Allen Stedman.

He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer S. Hobbs and her husband Craig; grandchildren: Allyson, Emily and Nolan Hobbs; a brother, Bruce Stedman and his wife Sharon; a niece, Karen Harding and her husband Evan and their family; and a nephew Chris Stedman and his wife Suzy and their family.

The family wishes to extend gratitude to Richard's landlords, Paul and Jane Godbout, for their support and friendship throughout the years.
