Marilyn Smothers, born on April 1, 1935, in Shelbyville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026, in Jackson, Tennessee. Marilyn lived a life full of purpose by serving her Lord through her church, her teaching and her community.

A proud graduate of Shelbyville Central High School, Marilyn pursued her passion for teaching and went on to become a respected professor at Union University until retirement. Her commitment to her students and her field was evident in the lives she touched over her lengthy career in education.

Marilyn was not only known for her professional accomplishments; she was also a devoted member of Meridian Baptist Church of Jackson, TN, where she was an integral part of the church community. Her faith played a significant role in her life, guiding her interactions with those around her.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 61 years, Marion Boyd Smothers, whose love and support were an essential part of her life. Marilyn was also preceded by her father, Cecil Rhodes Clanton, Sr., her mother, Martene Henslee Clanton, her brother, Cecil Rhodes Clanton, Jr., and her sister, Geraldine "Gerry" Clanton Mayes.

Marilyn is survived by her son, Chaplin Richard Clay Smothers, U.S. Navy, Ret. (Carla); her daughters, Gayna Traverse (Bill) and Dianne Smothers; her sisters, Madelyn Leto and Carolyn Woodfin; as well as seven adoring grandchildren, Jasmine Wilson, B.J. Traverse and wife Jenny, Lauren Smothers, Stephen Smothers, Chelsea Smothers, Nate Smothers, and Mahli Smothers. She also leaves behind six cherished great-grandchildren: Conner, Ty, and Alexandra Wilson, Jeremiah Traverse, Cason Rumble, and Clover Traverse.

Marilyn Smothers will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to her family, her passion for education, and her strong faith. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her loved ones and the countless students she inspired throughout her distinguished career.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.  at Meridian Baptist Church in Jackson, TN.  Visitation will be from noon until 2:00 p.m. that same date, at the church.  The church is located at 161 Harts Bridge Rd., Jackson, TN, 38301.
