________________________________________
Edith Charlene (Murphy) Bennett, age 77, of Erwin, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, January 22, 2026, with two of her sons, Kyle and Todd, by her side, holding her hands as she took her final breaths. Born in Yancey County, North Carolina, Edith was the beloved daughter of the late Conway and Dona (Peterson) Murphy. Though her roots were in Yancey County, she made Erwin her home, where she built a life filled with love, service, and deep devotion to her family and friends.
Edith was a woman of remarkable resilience, faithfully pressing on despite chronic illnesses with quiet strength and grace. She was of the Baptist faith, and she lived her life according to the words of Ecclesiastes 9:10 (KJV): "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might." This scripture was evident in everything Edith did. A gifted seamstress, she worked for many years at A&A Fashions, Industrial Garments, and later continued sewing and doing alterations from her home as she was able. Her sewing was done to perfection, and she took great pride in her work and in the people she dressed. She sewed many of her children's clothes when they were young and was known as someone dependable, meticulous, and always willing to go the extra mile.
Edith enjoyed sewing, shopping-especially at Talbots-looking through catalogs, watching hummingbirds, and flowers, all of which brought her peace and joy. She never met a stranger and had a giving heart, always ready to help someone in need. She had a rare way of making people feel seen and cared for, treating strangers like one of her own during their time of need.
Above all, Edith treasured time spent with her boys, Chris, Kyle, and Todd, who were the center of her world. Her home was a place of warmth, welcome, and comfort, and she made sure that no one around her ever went hungry-whether for food, kindness, or love. She enjoyed being around people and had a heart big enough for everyone she encountered.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY
In addition to her parents, Edith was preceded in death by her sister, Effie White; her brothers, Ronald Lee Murphy, Gene Murphy, and Donald Lee Murphy; and her infant twin siblings, Betty and Bobby Murphy.
