Donald Whalen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home - Boone on Oct. 1, 2025.
Donald Francis Whalen passed away on July 6, 2024, at the age of 75. Don was born in Baton Rouge, LA, on August 6, 1948, and was, as he was proud to tell, "small enough to fit in a shoebox." Little Donny "Legs" Whalen grew up in New Hampton, IA, protected by his older brother Bob "Chief" Whalen and adored by his little sister Mary Sue Whalen. He pursued journalism, theater, and singing through high school and, upon graduating, moved to Cedar Falls, IA, to attend the University of Northern Iowa. He was the first in his family to graduate from college, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1970 and a Master of Arts in 1971.
He met Karen Elizabeth Whalen, his wife of 53 years, during college and shortly after settled in Ames, Iowa. Don began work in the residence halls and through a series of promotions, became the Coordinator of Residence Life. He earned a PhD in Professional Studies in Education in 1987 and a host of awards and accolades during his decades of service to Iowa State University.
Despite his successful career, Don defined his life by his family. Don and Karen raised three children, Jennifer, Brandon, and Jordan, and became a grandfather to three grandchildren, Sephora, Aria, and Colette. Don was a patron of the constant dance recitals, football games, band concerts, and theater performances that parenting provided, offering glowing reviews and unwavering support.
Don was an avid runner, an enthusiastic singer, a mediocre guitarist, and a terrible comedian. His boundless praise and unwavering positive attitude was the backbone of the Whalen family. He will be greatly missed by everyone whose life he touched.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at the Ames Municipal Cemetery in Ames, Iowa.
