Amelia Portugal Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Coker-Mathews Funeral Home on Jan. 17, 2026.
Amelia Portugal, 79, of Greenville, Texas, passed away on January 13, 2026, in Greenville, Texas.

Amelia was born on January 12, 1947, in Santa Catarina, México, to Nieves Serratos and Teresa Sánchez. She married Meregildo Portugal on August 7, 1966, in León, Guanajuato, México.

In her younger years, Amelia worked as a nurse, a profession that reflected her caring and compassionate nature. After her marriage, she devoted herself to raising her family. Following the passing of her husband, Amelia returned to the workforce and was employed at Wings Factory, where she worked faithfully for 15 years. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting, a hobby she found relaxing and fulfilling, and she took pride in creating beautiful handmade items for family and friends.

Amelia attended St. William Catholic Church when she was able and found comfort in her faith. She will be remembered for her strong work ethic, loving heart, and unwavering dedication to her family.

She is survived by her children, Miguel Angel Portugal and wife, Claudia; Carol Portugal and husband, Danny Ray; Fernando Portugal and wife, Ruby; Martha E. Orozco and husband, Francisco; and Hector Portugal; her brothers, Antonio Serratos and Miguel Serratos; and her grandchildren, Christian, Angelina, Francisco Jr., Miguel A. Jr., Nicholas Ray, Luz Elena, and Olivia J.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Meregildo Portugal; her daughters, Maria Elena and Martha; her parents; and her sister, Guadalupe S. Jiménez.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel in Greenville, Texas. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until service time at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Royse City Cemetery in Royse City, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Francisco Jr., Nicholas Ray, Miguel A. Jr., Christian, Fernando Portugal, and Hector Portugal.

I don't know Amelia directly, but her son, Fernando and his wife and daughter, are my neighbors across the street in Missouri City, TX. So, I feel like I know her because her son is such a nice, friendly, hardworking, and family oriented person and that is surely due to his upbringing. His only fault is that he loves the Dallas Cowboys while I am for the Texans. lol Amelia's life story reminds me of my late wife's and my experiences -- married young, had a good extended family with a loving spouse, and kept active throughout her life. God bless Amelia. She is at peace now for eternity.
