Donald R. Strohmenger
March 11, 1939 - January 9, 2026
Donald R. Strohmenger, age 94, passed away at home on Friday, January 9, 2026. He was born on March 11, 1931 in Madison and was the son of Howard and Marie (Rademacher) Strohmenger.
Donald united in marriage with Eva Rebholz on September 8, 1956 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in East Bristol. For more than 40 years, Don farmed with his wife in the Sun Prairie area and drove school bus for 31 years. He was most proud of their six children and their families. He loved spending time with family living in Wisconsin and enjoyed traveling to Colorado, Wyoming, and Nevada to visit those living out west. His favorite pastime was a tossup between listening (also dancing) to big band swing music and playing sheepshead cards with friends and family. In his youth Don was a member of the Maple Knoll 4-H club and would later find himself leading that same club for his children. He served as the Catholic Order of Foresters youth director, organizing bowling tournaments and Christmas parties with visits from Santa. For years, Don bowled on local leagues and enjoyed playing dartball with Knights of Columbus. Unofficially he served as 'Mayor of Gerald Avenue' happily sitting in his driveway watching over the neighborhood and waving to anyone who passed by.
Don is survived by 4 sons, Robert (Courtney) of Bondurant, WY, William (Janet) of Jackson, WI, Richard (Diane) of Oregon, WI, and Daniel of Minneapolis, MN; 2 daughters, Linda Stout of Las Vegas, NV, and Karen Fonkert of Manitou Springs, CO; 18 grandchildren, Caleb, Kelsey, Darin (Jess), Taylor (Jake), Riley, Haley (Andrew), Abby, Bryce, Dylan, Issa (Billy), Kirsten (Jake), Jay, Rebecca, Katelyn, Madeleine, Marisa, Kat and Jenna; 6 great-grandchildren, Maeve, Felix, Charlotte, Lark, Leif and Juni; his neighbor who he considered his 5th son (Jesse Michele) Hernandez.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Eva; a brother Dean.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at Sacred Hearts Catholic Church 229 Columbus St., Sun Prairie. Father Vince Brewer will preside. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until Mass, at the church. Burial will be at Sun Prairie Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sacred Hearts Endowment Fund.
