Eugene Schneeberger Obituary

MOUNT HOREB, WI - Eugene Lee "Geno" Schneeberger, 82, of Mount Horeb, passed away at home on Thursday, January 22, 2026, with his wife and daughter by his side, after a year and a half battle with lung cancer. Born April 25, 1943, in Monroe, Wis., to Gladys (Blumer) and William Schneeberger, Geno was the fifth of eight children.



Geno grew up in Albany and attended UW-Platteville before being drafted to Vietnam, serving from 1964 to 1966. He was proud of his service, and got the homecoming he deserved on November 4, 2023, when he went on the Badger Honor Flight with his brother, Roger, to honor their service. He was chaperoned by his son-in-law, Jason, and escorted by his step-granddaughter, Alyson, at the homecoming in Madison - it was an experience that meant a lot to him.

In March 1968 he met the love of his life, Romaine, and after a (VERY) brief courtship, they were married on June 22, 1968. It was literally love at first sight and he was so proud of their marriage that endured for 58 years through troubled times, tragedies, and relocations, but the good times far outweighed the not so good times. He was especially proud of his bride for being an accomplished tarot card reader, a skill she tapped into after the death of their son as a path to healing that benefited them both.

After being Co-Owner of Center Tavern in Albany, Geno enjoyed many years working for Varco Prudens in Evansville. The company picnics at Lake Leota Park were the highlight of the summers. He later moved to Arkansas for work but moved back to Janesville where he worked at Fagan Chevrolet until he retired.

In his younger years he enjoyed playing softball, both fast and slow pitch; many summer weekends were spent at softball tournaments in the area. He also loved bowling, a family tradition, and served as secretary of the men's Thursday Night Bowling league at Albany Lanes. As he got older, he would do more golfing (he was GOOD!) and enjoyed working on small wood projects, including wishing wells and bridges that he would proudly display in the yard. He and Romaine went on many fun Greyhound bus excursions to tour historical cities. In recent years he spent his time working on puzzles (the more difficult the better) and donating money to the local casino.

He was the proud father of two children, son Geno Jr., whom he dearly missed, and daughter, Nichole.

Geno is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Romaine of Mount Horeb; daughter, Nichole (Jason) Schneeberger of Mount Horeb; siblings, Bob (Kathy) Schneeberger of Raymore, Mo., Joan (Bill) Flood of Albany, Roger Schneeberger of Oregon, Wis., and Kathy Naber of Versailles, Ky.; two step-granddaughters Alyson (Jameson) Nelms and Kirsten (Ryan) Swanke; and four step-great-grandchildren, Kane, Gwen, Henry and Jack; many nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends; and beloved canine companion, Bell. He was preceded in death by his son, Geno Jr.; parents, William and Gladys; parents-in-law, Henry and Delores Hilleque; brothers, Fred and Warren Schneeberger; sister, Eileen Althaus; nephew, Rick Althaus; grand-niece, Crystal Beer; brother-in-law, Mick Naber; and sister-in-law, LaVonne Schneeberger.

The family would like to thank the Oncology Department and Dr. Lapeak at Upland Hills in Dodgeville, and Agrace HospiceCare and nurse Brittany for their compassionate care.

A celebration of life will be held at the AMERICAN LEGION POST 144, 300 N. Water St., Albany, Wis., from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2026. Memorials may be made in Geno's memory to the American Legion Post 144 or the Albany Lions Club.
