Shirley Carlson Born: May 24, 1926; Sewickley, PA Died: Feb. 9, 2014; Willowbrook, IL Shirley McPherson Carlson, age 87, died in the arms of her son, Doug, and daughter, Kim, on February 9, 2014, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Willowbrook, IL. Shirley was born in Sewickley, PA on May 24, 1926 to the late Carl McPherson and Margaret McPherson Wiley of Lancaster, PA. She graduated from Westchester State Teachers College. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Elmhurst. Shirley retired in 1987 from York Community High School where she taught physical education for 21 years. She was married to Allen M. Carlson for 60 years. Shirley is survived by her sister, Mary Medicus of Conshohoken, PA; one son, Douglas (Bernice) of Glen Ellyn; daughter, Kimberly (Larry Shatuck) of Portland OR; two grandsons, Ryan Carlson (Alissa) of Chicago and Kevin Carlson of Glen Ellyn; one great granddaughter, Amelia; two nephews and one niece. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen; and her daughter, Sue Ellen Tarantello. Friends and former students are invited to join the family for a celebration of Shirley 's life to be held 11:00 AM on Saturday May 3, 2014 at First Congregational Church, 235 S. Kenilworth Ave, Elmhurst, IL 60126.
