Roy C. Pechous, age 79, of Henderson, Nevada, and formerly of Berwyn, passed away peacefully October 16, 2015 surrounded by his loving family.
Roy is survived by his wife of 29 years, Vera (nee Mirkovic); his daughter, Monica; and three of his five brothers, Donald (late Carla), John (Nancy) and Kenneth (Pam).
He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. Pechous and Frances A. (Seidel) Pechous; and his brothers, Robert (Beth) and Vernon (late Carole).
Born in Berwyn on June 16, 1936, he attended Hiawatha Elementary School, Morton High School and Father Flanagan's Boy's Town in Omaha Nebraska. Mr. Pechous graduated from the John Marshall Law School with a Doctors in Law and held a degree in Finance Management from Southern Illinois University.
He was also a proud Veteran of the US Army. Roy was one of the six brothers all of whom served honorably in the military service.
Before retiring, Mr. Pechous maintained a law practice for more than 40 years in Berwyn. Roy was elected and served the 7th District as Delegate to the Illinois Constitutional Convention where he made numerous contributions to our present Illinois Constitution. In 1971, he was elected to the Morton College Board, instrumental in building the present day college. Roy also served a six year term as an Illinois Civil Service Commissioner and attained the ranking of Chairman. Roy held various government positions throughout his successful career: Supervisor of Hearing Officers at the Illinois Commerce Commission, Assistant Attorney General, Hearing Officer for the Illinois Pollution Control Board, Administrative Law Judge, and as Assistant State's Attorney of Cook County, Criminal Division.
Roy was a part-time instructor at Morton College and Western Electric Adult Education Program and was a member of numerous civic, professional and fraternal organizations. Even after retirement, he continued to be active in the State of Nevada with positions across Immigration, Nevada Department of Transportation and the teaching Clark County School System.
Roy was interested in fitness, running several miles per day. He had a passion for aviation and was an experienced instrument and multi-engine pilot, enjoying time in the sky with his Cessna Cardinal plane and as Major and Commander of the 101st Air Rescue Squadron of Civil Air Patrol.
Roy is fondly remembered as a man that has left a legacy with his service to country and community, his kind heart and generous demeanor. His many accomplishments and accolades pale in comparison to the joy he received spending time with his cherished daughter Monica.
"Roy will always be remembered for his outgoing personality and many friends," said his brother, Donald. "He loved his family and gave generously of himself to many social and civic causes."
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 13, 2015 at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Masaryk Section, Lot 155A. Guests are asked to arrive before 10:00 a.m. to meet at the main building of the Cemetery Grounds. The interment will proceed from there. Mount Auburn Cemetery, 4101 S. Oak Park Avenue, Stickney, IL.
