Robin Sprietsma Obituary
Robin Lee Sprietsma
Robin Lee Sprietsma (nee Probert) died peacefully on October 11, 2017, following 95 years of a life well-lived.
She became the first college graduate in her family when she graduated from Cornell College. Following her husband's death in 1973 she earned a Library Technical Assistant degree from the College of DuPage. In 1976 she became the first Children's Librarian of the Lisle Public Library, a position in which she served until her retirement in 1989.
Robin was an active member of the DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church for over 60 years, having joined in the second year after the church was established. She was an organizer and the first president of the Unitarian Universalist Women's Association, as well as having served in many roles, including historian and archivist, a role she occupied until last year.
Reflecting her wide-ranging interests, Robin served as president of each organization in which she became a member. She was a president of the Downers Grove American Association of University Women and a long-time member. In addition, as a homemaker while her children were young, she served as president and member of the Lisle Home and School Organization. In addition, she was a founding member and president of the Lisle Heritage Society, as well as a Guild member and quilter.
Robin shared her love of books as a Great Books discussion leader and a member of three different book clubs (AAUW, DUUC, and the Lisle Library) throughout her adult life. When she moved to Brookdale of Lisle, she became the librarian of the Brookdale library and ran the book discussion group for residents (as well as serving on the Resident's Board).
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard C. Sprietsma, U. S. Marine Corps WWII veteran and Proviso West High School math and science teacher.
Robin is survived by her three children, Suzanne Sprietsma Pallak, Lyndi Sprietsma, and Rex Sprietsma (and his wife Alla); grandchildren, Michelle Movahed, Ross Sprietsma, Edwin Sprietsma Steinmetz, Raymond Sprietsma, and Richard Sprietsma; and great-grandchildren, Zoe, Olivia, and Burke Movahed.
A celebration of her life will be held at the DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church, Naperville, Illinois at 11:30 a.m. on November 26.
In lieu of flowers a donation (designated either for a bench in her memory or for the endowment fund) may be made to the DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church.
