Philip Hannan Obituary

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Former Archbishop Philip Matthew Hannan, who gave the eulogy for President John F. Kennedy and later served more than three decades as the head of the New Orleans Roman Catholic Archdiocese, died Thursday. He was 98.

The archdiocese said he died peacefully shortly after 3 a.m. He had been in declining health for years.

Hannan was the 11th archbishop in New Orleans history and one of the most active. When he turned 75 and had to retire as archbishop, he became president of WLAE-TV, the public television station he founded.

Assigned to New Orleans in 1965 from Washington, where he had been auxiliary bishop since 1956, he found the old St. Louis Cathedral, in the middle of an area of the French Quarter a-swarm with tourists, street performers, tarot card readers and musicians, had a unique pleasure for a churchman.

"This is the only city where an archbishop can walk into his cathedral while a band outside in Jackson Squ are is playing 'When the Saints Go Marching In,'" he said.

When Kennedy was assassinated Nov. 22, 1961, his widow, Jacqueline, asked Hannan to deliver the eulogy because of his close personal relationship with the president, which dated back to the 1940s. Then-Father Hannan became friends with Kennedy by smoothing over a misunderstanding that Kennedy had with a Jesuit priest.

He also officiated at a quiet reburial of two Kennedy infants in 1964 so their bodies could be near their father's in Arlington National Cemetery.

"We did it in the middle of the night, and so quietly that we caught everyone off guard," Hannan said in 1965. "Not even the Army chauffeurs knew where they were going when they picked us up."

In 1968, Hannan returned to Washington from New Orleans to give the graveside eulogy for Sen. Robert. F. Kennedy.

When Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis died of cancer in 1994, Hannan was again at Arlington to preside at a brief service preceding h er burial.

As New Orleans' archbishop, Hannan combined conservative politics and service to the poor.

Highlights of his tenure as archbishop included the 1987 visit of Pope John Paul II - a visit that Hannan began angling for in 1984. After a while, said Hannan, "Every time he saw me, he'd simply say, 'New Orleans! New Orleans!'"

Hannan lost a struggle to block the "no nukes" pastoral letter approved by the nation's Catholic bishops in Chicago in 1983. He argued that the politics inherent in the letter could not help disarmament talks.

"Obviously, if the Russians think that 50 million Catholics are going to believe that we must say a 'no' to nuclear war ... then, of course, we have no strength from which to argue for disarmament," he said.

Despite what were labeled conservative views, Hannan had few peers in liberal social action.

He said he decided to push the diocese to serve the poor when he walked through the city's squalid public housi ng projects in 1965, shortly after his transfer from Washington.

Hannan created what was at the time the largest housing program for the elderly - 2,780 units - of any U.S. diocese. The archdiocese also operates one of the biggest Catholic Charities in the nation. When Hannan stepped down, its $20 million budget was helping more than 47,000 people a year.

Under his guidance, the church set up a hospice for AIDS patients. He said there was no contradiction in a ministry for homosexuals and drug addicts.

"We disapprove, too, of people being alcoholics or drinking too much. But we sure try to take care of them if they have that problem," he said.

Hannan was born in Washington, D.C., the fourth of eight children born to an Irish immigrant and a fourth-generation Washingtonian. His late sister, Dr. Mary Mahoney, once was president of the National Conference of Catholic Women.

He was ordained in Rome in 1938 and served two years at a church in Baltimor e, then volunteered as a paratroops chaplain in World War II, getting the nickname "The Jumping Padre."

When U.S. troops took the city of Cologne, Germany, Hannan dodged through front lines to the cathedral, had himself appointed temporary pastor, and, when the fighting passed, posted Army guards to prevent looting or more damage.

In 1945, Hannan helped liberate a camp of starving prisoners from the German prisoner of war camp at Wobbelin. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of major.

After the war, he served in the Washington archdiocese, moving up to auxiliary bishop in 1956.

Decades after he left Washington, Hannan still chuckled about the time President Truman, a card-playing Baptist, called him for a discreet visit to the Oval Office.

"Harry Truman had just been bawled out by his pastor ... for proposing an ambassador to the Holy See. Now he was calling in a priest to bless a huge St. Christopher medal for a new presidential airplane."

Many years ago in a little church in Kilmarnock, VA, my mother recognized Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hannan...someone who she went to graduate school with at CU in the late 1930's. They left Tides Inn and visited at our cottage on the Potomac on their way back to DC. A couple of years lated I found myself at VISI Jr. College with Maureen and we became great friends. She could always get us invited to the gracious home of her parents (away from the cloister!) by saying the Bishop was coming to dinner and would love for some of the girls to be there. Never had dinner with him tho I wish I had but had many good times at the Hannan home. God bless you all.

Over the many years, my husband and I both had the priviledge of meeting you at many different events. Sometimes it was when you visited our church as a new parish, or you blessed our children at their confirmation, and even once when you presented my husband with the honored St Louis Medallion for service to his church parish. Each time we shook you hand or bowed our heads to receive a blessing, it was like touching the Holy Spirit. You were truly a Blessed person and a gift to the citizens of New Orleans. You will always live on in our heart's memory.

My condolences to the family of Archbishop Hannon and to the people of New Orleans on the loss of a true American hero. Archbishop Hannon was a perfect example of what an American Catholic should be and we would do well to emulate him. We shall surely miss him. May God Bless Archbishop Hannon, his family, and the people of New Orleans.

Several years ago (early Jan. 'o8), I ran into Archbishop Hannan in an Old Covington Restaurant while having lunch with my wife and young children. I ask for (and received) a benediction for my family and myself. I mentioned that I would be tuning 50 in a few days, and asked if he would be interested in attending the soiree we were planning that weekend at my house in Folsom. He said that he would be delighted, and he did, in fact, attend. That evening, his driver told me that His Excellency had "blown-off" a Hornet's game in order to attend. We were all certainly taken aback! My older sisters were delighted, since the Archbishop had confirmed them both "many moons ago"; and of course, my friends (including the local priest) were all impressed (although they all remarked, "nice try, Verne, but we all know you...if YOU are expecting Special Dipensation, you're gonna need the POPE in attendance!"). This, His Excellency got a real kick out of!

We all remember him fondly. We will all miss him sadly.

I will miss this hero I admired for so many things. When my time comes I know that if I need a bit of help when standing before Our Lord he will be there to put in the good word. We could always count on him here and we can count on him to look out for us now that he is with God.

To The Archdioceses of New Orleans, My thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sorrow. I enjoyed talking with him when I was a member of the Cathedral Choir. The Archbishop was also a part of my 1986 graduation at Xavier University. I was always proud to have know Archbishop Hannan, because of him I was able to participate in Pope John Paul II visit to New Orleans at Xavier and the Superdome, which I came from Atlanta to be apart of . May Archbishop Hannan soul rest in peace and may the angels welcome him into Paradise.

Archbishop Hannan confirmed me when I was 13 years old, back in 1972 in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Plaquemines Parish, LA. Back then, no one of importance would ever travel down to our area, so when my confirmation class heard the Archbishop of New Orleans was going to be confirming us, we got "so excited" and just could not believe that someone from the "Big City" of New Orleans cared enough to come down to the bayou. It was an honor and a privilege to have him confirm me, and needless to say, I always had a special place in my heart for him. He was an inspiration to me and many other Catholics with the way he delivered God's message, but most of all, he had that down-to-earth approach that made it easy for people to understand and accept the word of our Father. The front page of The Times Picayune said it all, "He Loved the people of New Orleans, and we Loved him too"!! Thank you Archbishop Hannan for sharing your life with us.

Archbishop Hannan, you were a great pastor and shepherd to all of us. I enjoyed cantoring at Confirmations and other liturgies you celebrated; I was most impressed with your pastoral vision and Christian Mission for the Archdiocese. What a privilege to have attended a Mass under your direction. Will always remember you as I will remember the papal visit to New Orleans - what a lasting memory. When the Servant of the Lord Archbishop Philip Hannan once said that as the archbishop entered his Cathedral the band played "When the Saints Go Marchin' In", as His Eminence stepped through "The Pearly Gates of Heaven", that same band was there playing that tune: "When the Saints Go Marchin In". In the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Church commemorates on October 1st the Feast of the Protection of the Theotokos, His Eminence will be remembered in the prayers of the Divine Liturgy. For Archbishop Philip "vicnaja pamjat, blazennij pokoj - eternal memory, peaceful repose".

Archbishop Hannan arrived at the time of Hurricane Betsy and made his first pastoral visits to the most stricken areas in a boat. He endeared himself to the people of New Orleans with his humble and kind manner -- there wasn't a pompous bone in his body! He lived through many turmoils in New Orleans, including Hurricane Katrina, which he spent hunkered down in the WLAE studio, with National Guardsmen bringing him food and water while he stood guard over the facility (age 88)! He was a great man of God and will be missed by many people. May he live forever in eternal peace.

Welcome Home
written by L J Coon

Welcome home my friend, from so much suffering
Welcome home my friend, step out of the pain
It’s ok to cry, we've all seen tears before
Its ok my friend welcome home

Talk of love one’s lost, so many years ago
And how you hurt inside, till no more tears would flow
Let the healing start, you can't look back no more
Its ok my friend welcome home

Welcome home, from so much suffering
Welcome home, step out of the pain
It’s ok to cry, we've all seen tears before
Its ok my friend, welcome home

Could I somehow sooth, your pain that lives within
If you just let go, the healing will begin
Holding on so tight, letting go is half the test
Its ok my friend welcome home

Welcome home, from so much suffering
Welcome home, step out of the pain
It’s ok to cry, we've all seen tears before
Its ok my friend, welcome home

It’s ok my friend…the pain won't hurt, no more ...
