Patricia Siegel Obituary

Patricia A. Siegel

Born: September 14, 1939

Died: March 9, 2018

Patricia A. Siegel, 78, of Elmhurst, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 9, 2018.

Born in the Lincoln Square area of Chicago on September 14, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Dorothy (Cornell) Mau. She was educated in Chicago schools and graduated from nursing school. In 1960 she married Burton Siegel; they later divorced.

Patricia was employed as a Nurse in Chicago hospitals, retiring in 2001. She started her career as a nurse's aid in high school and went into nurse's training at Mount Sinai Hospital shortly after graduation.

Pat and her best friend, Jeannette Fitzharris, inaugurated a midwife birthing center at Illinois Masonic Hospital, the first of it's kind in the Midwest. They felt there were better alternatives than a cold, sterile environment in a hospital setting and modeled the birthing center after learning about one at a hospital in San Francisco. The birthing center received a lot of media attention with Pat and Jeannette being featured in Time Magazine, many news articles and television interviews. Pat worked at the birthing center for 23 years.

Pat loved traveling, making it a point to visit many countries and experience different cultures throughout her life.

Survivors include her children, Jay (Michelle Hafke) Siegel of Kenosha, WI and Todd Siegel of Chicago, IL; and two grandchildren, Aiden Siegel and Ryan Siegel; and sister-in-law, Kristy Mau.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Theodore Mau, Jr; and stepfather, Gonzalo Govantes.

A celebration of Patricia's life will be held at Lexington Square 400 W. Butterfield Rd in Elmhurst at 3:00pm on Saturday, April 21st, 2018.

Pat was a treasured friend of many years. She shared her vision of the birthing center and she and Jeannette
made it a reality.
Listening to Pat's recall of her traveling adventures over coffee was always a welcomed time for me. Her enthusiasm for life was inspiring.
Jay and Todd were the loves of her life and they were the topics of many conversations when she would stop by for a visit.
Fortunate are we who benefited from her friendship,
her care and her love. Pat, save me a seat at your table.

Aunt Pat was the coolest woman to me, she was young, a nurse, worked downtown, travelled, and took an real interest in me and my younger years, through my nursing school and then even as a nurse, she was always my role model. Love you Aunt Pat!

Pat was one of the first friends I made when I moved into the dorm at Mt. Sinai in 1957. Through the years we shared many good (and bad) times. My thoughts are with you Jay and Todd and your families. Judy Rosenblum

I met Pat when we went on a group camping trip to Door County. That was the first of many trips we took. She was a true friend and I will miss her.

Pat was my closest friend and confidante for 46 years. We met when our sons became friends in Kindergarten. We worked together as nurses and we played together. We would laugh from morning till night. I can't remember an argument or disagreement. We did Spring break every year during grammar school. Our children remain friends today. We traveled all through the Soviet Union together. We went to Athens and cruised the Greek Islands. We vacationed in the Carribbean. Pat's goal was to travel everywhere and I believe she succeeded. She saw the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the wall in China and the Taj Mahal in India. She was the keeper of my secrets and memories. I am heartbroken and will miss her everyday. Everyone should have a lifelong friend as good as Pat, Rest In Peace dear friend.
