Nancy Roberts Obituary

Nancy Bittinger Roberts passed away in Atlantis, Florida on March 13. Born Nancy Barker in Sycamore, Illinois in 1927, she was educated in public schools in Rochelle, Illinios, and Sycamore, Illinois, and attended the University of Illinois where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She married E. Mason Bittinger of Onarga, Illinois in 1947, and the couple settled in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. They had four children: David Bittinger, Tom (Julie) Bittinger, Steve Bittinger, and Betsy (Carl) Waters. Nancy's devotion to her family and extended family was matched by her passion for wide-ranging ideals and causes. She was a lifeguard as a teenager. In her twenties and thirties, she gave book reviews on subjects that mattered to her, and worked for civil rights and humanitarian causes. In the late '60s and '70s, Nancy opened and ran, in Glen Ellyn, the first suburban research workshop for Leo Burnett Co. of Chicago. She also did some fashion modelling, and found the time to manage family, career and her social interests energetically. Nancy married Tom Roberts, Jr. in 1974, moved to DeKalb, and added his children Tom III (Margaret) Roberts, Cathy Suskin (Kevin McCarthy), Shawn Roberts (Rusty Davenport), and Mike Roberts to her loving relationships. Nancy was preceded in death by her brother Jack Barker and her sister Janet Hooker. In addition to her husband Tom and her children, Nancy is survived by her brother David Barker and her grandchildren: Eric, Cary (Anthony Ninneman), Crystal, Holly, Katie, Wendy, Erin, Abby, Scott, Justin, Tom, Mike, Josh, Paige, Ellie, Danny, and Annie. Over the last 30 years of her life, Nancy devoted increasing time to social and humanitarian causes, and had new American arrivals live with her family in DeKalb. She was a long-time board member of the American Refugee Committee, and worked with many other organizations, including Hope Haven, DeKalb Co. 4-C's, The Harbour Island Day Nursery (Bahamas), The Children's Learning Center, and The Growing Place. Through her personal relationships and her humanitarian work, Nancy Roberts touched the lives of many people and made a heartfelt contribution to many families and communities near and far from her home. A memorial service will be held at Mayfield Church outside Sycamore, Illinois, at 3:00 p.m., on Saturday, March 22.

Dear Betsy and Family,
We will continue to lift you up in prayer. I'm so sorry for the loss of your mother. She was an amazing woman. I recall the stories Lee and Marcia would share about your mom. How much fun they had! Thank you for being such a good friend to Lee. Your kindness when our Chris went to be with the Lord really touched my heart. Thank you for your sweet spirit. Now we know that your Mom and Chris are having a blast in Heaven! And we'll join them there someday! Stay close to Jesus!

Love,
Linda Gooding

I remember Nancy Bittinger fondly from my seven years in Market Research at Leo Burnett, in the late 60's and early 70's. She was a sweet lady. Reading about her after Burnett years makes me wish we'd kept in touch.
My condolences to her family and friends. She touched the lives of many and will live on in her children and grandchildren, and in the hearts of minds of many.

My sympathy to the Bittingers and the Roberts families. Nancy was such a wonderful, amazing person. She was a dear friend of my late sister and brotherinlaw, Marge and Tuck Faulkner, and my friend too. We played tennis & bridge together and attended meetings like the benefits for the Am.Refugee Com. Also, my dad, Cyril Cook, built the Bittinger's house on Duane St. in Glen Ellyn. I've always admired her so much! My husband Dave and I send our condolences.

Aunt Nancy had one of the most incredible hearts of anyone that I have ever known. She loved so many people and touched so many lives. She had the ability to make each individual feel like they were the most important person in the world. She touched my life in a deep way and I am forever changed. I am praying for all of the family as they grieve this loss.

I met Nancy through my wife Linda who has worked for the Roberts family for the last 21 years. Through Linda's employment with Nancy, I have had a unique opportunity to see the impact she made in this world. Her generosity and compassion spanned continents, changed many lives and inspired countless others to care.
I always felt like family when I was with Nancy and she treated Linda and our son Ryan the same.
I will miss her smile, her energy and her endless love for humanity. To get an opportunity to meet a person such as Nancy comes along all too seldom.
Thank you Nancy for giving me that rare opportunity.

I want to extend my hand into the circle of friendship that surrounds Nancy.

I have only known Nancy for a few years, but a few years have certainly been long enough for me to know the amazing spirit that was her essence.

Nancy’s humanity echoes throughout the programs of ARC. She used ARC as a conduit to touch countless lives and to extend hope to thousands of people around the world.

I know what she leaves behind and I know the seeds she has sown that will forever be her legacy.

Nancy will live on through her gifts to mankind.

When the world wasn’t looking, Nancy always was.

We will miss her very much.

Most Sincerely,

Susan Fink

Betsy, Carl and all Nancy's family. Mother's are very very special as you well know. Nancy was a most vibrant human being and will always be remembered as that person. Since I work at Founders Library, I did have occasional chats with her when she came in and always asked about all of you. A wonderful mother and person will be forever loved.

Tom, Julie, Eric, Cary, Anthony, and family,

I am so sorry to hear of "Neena's" death. I don't know that I have ever heard a granddaughter talk so much about and so highly of her grandmother. She was an amazing woman, and her memory will live on forever. I have heard so many wonderful stories about Nancy, and have her to thank for some of my own stories and memories. My thoughts, prayers, and heart are with all of you.

I remember Nancy as one of the cool mom's of the neighborhood. She wasn't worried that there was some dirt behind my ears and always made me feel more grown-up than I really was.

Of course I remember the holiday picnics and shaving cream pie fight between Nancy and Chuck Jones. I thought that was really out-rageous for adults to act that way...spontaneous and light-hearted.

As a daughter of a kindred spirit to Nancy, (my Dad, Tom Hoffman) I know what an empty spot you all have in your hearts right now.

Nancy was cool, she was fun but most of all she was inspiring. With love, Beth Hoffman

Nancy popped up several times in my life and each one was a pleasure. From going to a Cubs game with her and David in '72 or '73 (I forget) to working at her bookstore...more after that. What a philanthropic and fun lady. We'll surely miss her.

Nancy referred to me as her "Little Brother" even though I'm not so little anymore. Nancy as my "big Sister" is the one that is bigger than life, as much fun as a barrel of monkeys, and will remain as a Big Sister to a big world she loved so much!

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Nancy's death. She was an integral part of the old neighborhood gang that "grew up together" in Glen Ellyn. What great times we shared in the 1950s and 60s!

I will forever remember Nancy for her loving heart that she so generously opened to give of her time, talent and treasure to a wounded world, her gift for making everyone comfortable, her engaging smile and her ability to laugh at herself.

Dear Nancy, you will be greatly missed.

May God's Peace be with the Barker, Bittinger and Roberts Families.

We are deeply saddened by Nancy's passing. To say that she meant so much to so many is an understatement. We saw her kindness and willingness to give of herself first hand with our own family as she lovingly did what she could to help our mother through her long 13 year battle with cancer. We grieve with you for the loss you all share. Please know that the wonderful smile of Nancy's brought joy into the lives of so many people, her heart was lined with love, and you, her family, and all of us were blessed to have known her. We will forever be touched by a remarkable woman who never stopped giving of herself. God bless you all - Nancy is in heaven catching up on old news with our Mom!

On behalf of the board, staff, and residents of Hope Haven, I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to Nancy's family. It was a priviledge to work with Nancy, and to experience first hand her commitment to equality, justice and social responsibility. She opened her heart, and even her home to the homeless in our community. At pool parties she would host, she treated the residents of Hope Haven like honored guests. Her special sense of kindness and grace was rare, and will be truly missed.
To me, she was a mentor and dear friend. Rest in peace Nancy, you left this world a better place.
