Michael Ronald Vavrek, age 73, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in his final hours on Sunday, February 15, 2015, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

A lifelong Cicero resident, Michael graduated from St. Dionysius School and Morton East High School. He served in the United States Army as a military police officer. He joined the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1992.

A simple man with old fashioned values, Michael enjoyed horse racing, fishing, playing cards and listening to traditional country music. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was also an avid sports fan.

Michael is survived by his sister, Beverly (Frank) Shubert; nephews, Frank (Susan) Shubert and Mark Shubert; niece, Tracy (Eric) Magyar; great nephews, Frank Shubert IV, Tristan and Severus Magyar; great nieces, AnnMarie and Kimberley Shubert.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Anne Vavrek; and baby brother, Philip.

Visitation Friday, February 20, 2015, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Suburban Family Funeral Home, 5940 W. 35th. St. (Corner of 35th. St. & Austin), Cicero. Funeral Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 9:30 a.m., from Suburban Family Funeral Home, to St. Mary of Czestochowa Church, for Mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery.
