Matti Matson Obituary

LUDLOW - Matti Allan Matson, 96, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at Springfield Health & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born May 13, 1916, the son of Max and Annie (Nisula) Matson, in Maynard, Mass., where he graduated from Maynard High School in 1934 and married Mary Helen Zelukiewicz Feb. 6, 1937.

He worked at Abbott Worsted Co. in Forge Village, Mass., a mill in Saxonville, Mass., a military office in Washington, D.C., and the procurement office of Watertown (Mass.) Arsenal.

Mr. Matson served in the U.S. Coast Guard as Boswain's mate II in the Boston Navy Yard and in the U.S. Army during World War II in Oregon and the South Pacific.

After the war, he was employed as government guard at Cushing Hospital in Framingham, Mass., and later at Hanscom Air Force Base as an electrician, engine manager, then base supply manager, retiring in 1975.

He was a member of Charles F. Welch Masonic Lodge of Maynard and Vermont Finnish-American Society in Ludlow.

In earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was a member of the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts.

Survivors include three children, Robert of Boston, Mass., Mary Ann of Nashua, N.H., and Joan Willett of Ludlow, with whom he lived; three grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons.

He was predeceased by his wife in 2006 and an infant sister, Gertrude, in 1914.

In Maynard, calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at the Fowler-Kennedy Funeral Home, 42 Concord St., where the funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, with the Rev. Gary Heikkila officiating and followed by burial in Glenwood Cemetery.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Joanie and Richard, I'm so sorry that I missed the wake on Sunday. I didn't find the obituary until today. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Please extend my condolences to your family.

Matson family sorry for your loss, Mr. Matson will be sadly missed. Always a pleasant man, like talking to him at the Hudson Post Office, when he came in to get his mail.
