Celebrating life without you has not been easy but every time I interact with KJ I am fully reminded of you. He has become your spitting image and not just your name sake. The only thing I wonder is if you two would be partners in crime or clashing. My bet is you two would be a force like no other as partners in crime, clashing like Uncle and Dad (LOL). I love and miss you bro!!

I knew Kermit through 4-H. We were about 15 years old and became friends instantly. I have pictures of me and Kermit in our Tuxedos at the 4H congress at the Hilton Hotel in Chicago, IL. We had some great 4-H memories as friends. Then I met him a few times on Mississippi State campus and I drove him around my neigborhood the country side of Starkville. We talked about old times and 4-H memories. I think about you alot and you are a good friend.

I will always remember your huge smile, constant inquisitive attitude and just being a good friend and fellow officer. I was lucky enough to know Kermit in Officer Training School at Maxwell AFB, AL AND while at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas. I will never forget his huge smile, fantastic outgoing attitude and his inquisitive nature. He made a great impression on me as both a fellow Air Force Officer and as a good friend. I didn't learn about the accident until about a month later, but it hit me pretty hard. It is hard losing such a good person. I still think about Kermit and his huge smile and wish I'd had more time to work with him. Super person just taken home too soon. RIP my friend. You will forever missed. God Bless the Evans family.

Not a day goes by that I'm not reminded of Kermit's good deeds. One of the last nights I remember with him in the summer of 2006, before his deployment, was of him talking about being a good father to his son, and a good husband to his wife. I've worn a memorial bracelet in his honor on my two deployments, and I know Kermit is keeping an eye on me. Thanks for everything, buddy. I miss you.

Kermit was like a big brother. Kermit was one of the guys in Hollandale you look up too. I can remember being in his fathers boy scout troop. One day after a scout meeting we decided to play football in the back yard. Kermit was the quarterback telling all of us little guys where to run, how to run, and also what to do. Kermit never knew this but he and his father influenced me to play football on that day. I went out for junior high football after that day. I also followed Kermit when he played at our high school. He wasn't the biggest guy out on the field but he didn't lack in courage & heart. Kermit came with it every down and you felt it. If not for guys like Kermit we as Americans wouldn't have the freedoms we take for granted. Kermit, my BIG BRO, you will forever live in my memory. I salute you Capt. Kermit O. Evans, a hero from the small delta town of Hollanadale, MS.

March 9, 2010

Kermit was a wonderful soul. I had the opportunity to know Kermit through 4-H work. My daughter, Cathea and he were 4-h friends. Kermit is gone from our physical presence, but will always be present in our hearts, minds, and spirits. God's peace upon his parents, wife, and family, and many thanks to one of america's finest for giving the ultimate for his country.

I recently attended my Annual awards banquet and the theme for the night was "Why We Serve". All the attendees were given a blue jewelry box with a gold string wrapping it closed. Inside my gift box was a dog tag with the name Capt. Kermit O. Evans. Everyone received a different dog tag, but this was the one I received. So, I want to thank Capt. Evans, his wife, kids, and family for his service to our country. I will wear this dog tag with pride in remembrance of one of nation’s fallen heroes and always remember "Why We Serve". Capt Evans you gave your life for us and we thank you.

Capt Evans probably didn't know me that well...we shook hands and were introduced out there when I first arrived at our unit in Iraq. I just remember that he was very personable. He had an awesome smile and seemed to love what he was doing. Not long afterwards, he was gone. I knew he was a great man by the amount of respect he had from his troops and co-workers. I knew he left a huge hole in some of the hearts of his close friends because I saw how torn up they were at his military memorial service out there. Even though Capt Evans didn't know me that well, I think of him often. I think of his family. I think of the sacrifices they have made for their country. There is an empty place left in my heart from this loss. May God always be with his wife, son and family to comfort them.

I remember Kermit from Miss State Univ also. I first met him while he was selling cell phones. I used to see him in the mall and would stop by the place where he worked just to chat. I still have the landline phone he sold me right before he joined the Air Force. He is greatly missed. ~Remember earth has no sorrows that Heaven cannot heal.~

Kerm and I were stationed together at Nellis AFB until I left for Korea in 2004. If you haven't heard by now, Kermit always had a smile on his face. It was nearly impossible to be around Kermit and not be happy. In fact I'm smiling now thinking about the Vegas days. My last time seeing Kermit was in August of 2004 and the last email I received from him was about 2 months before he passed. His memorial service at Nellis AFB was the only time I've ever cried as a grown man. The positive thing I took from that service was looking at his son. It was like a minature Kermit had blessed us with his presence. May God continue to bless your wife Pernetha and son Kermit Jr.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Kermit, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to CPT Kermit O. Evans our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Kermit. And to Kermit it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made while serving the U.S. Air Force and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Kermit, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,385 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Kermit’s family and loved ones.

Kermit was a great man, I remember the conversation we had minutes before he got on the CH-46. He was a great man and a proud father. A Great Air Force officer and mentor to us all. Kermit you are missed. God Bless

My deepest and heart felt sympathy goes out to the family of Captain Kermit O Evans. I've known Kermit all of his life. We went to elementary and high school together. To Mr. and Mrs. Evans, I will always love you. Your son was a great person. To Kermit's wife, I never met you but I pray that God will continue to strengthen you and your baby. "For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle be dissolved, we have a another building not made by hand."
