James Quetsch Obituary

Former Illinois Appellate Justice James Franklin Quetsch, 75, of Geneva, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 after an illness. He was born on Nov. 13, 1933, in Oak Park, Ill. At the time of his death, he was at home, surrounded by his loving family. Jim graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School in 1952, and received a bachelor's degree in economics from Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind., in 1956. He married his high-school sweetheart, Patricia Perrin, on Sept. 3, 1956, at St. Giles Catholic Church in Oak Park. In 1959, Jim graduated from Chicago Kent Law School. He practiced law in Chicago and the couple lived in Oak Park until 1963, when they moved to West Chicago. That year, he began working for the law firm of Gates Clancy in Geneva. In 1965, he joined the firm of Corrigan & MacKay in Wheaton. A successful trial lawyer, he became a partner several years later in the expanded firm of Corrigan, MacKay, Quetsch and O'Reilly. Jim was the father of six children, born between 1957 and 1966. He and Pat moved their family to Geneva in 1972. He was appointed a Kane County Court Associate Judge in 1975 and elected as a full judge in the 16th Circuit Court in 1976. He held the position until 1992, when he became an Illinois Appellate Court Justice in the Second District. He was appointed to the seat by his predecessor, Justice John Nickels, who was elected to the Illinois Supreme Court. Following his retirement in 1994, Jim traveled extensively with his wife. Among their destinations were South America, Israel, and several European countries including his favorite, Ireland. Jim was a member of the St. Charles Sportsmen's Club in Elburn for more than 20 years, spending many pleasurable hours there, shooting trap and skeet. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Gertrude (Shea) and Leonard J. Quetsch; and his brothers, Leonard, William and John. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his brother Richard of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his sister Gertrude of St. Louis, Mo.; his children, Karen Quetsch, Martha Quetsch and Elizabeth Entile, all of Geneva, and Thomas (Patricia Seastrom Banbury) Quetsch and Paula (Vincent) Giuliano, both of Batavia, and James (Jo Martin) Quetsch of Idaho Falls, Idaho; 10 grandchildren, Natalie Entile, Phillip and Julie Andersen, Caroline Cagney, Paul, Marie and Francesca Giuliano, Kyle and Casey Banbury, and Megan (Banbury) Mara; and one great-grandchild, Vincent Mara; and his beloved Vizsla, Maggie. A memorial visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2009 at the Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State St. (Route 38), Geneva. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Malone Funeral Home. Interment will be private. In lieu of sending flowers, please do a kindness for someone today.

I miss my dad. He was such a consistent source of emotional support for me and my family, particularly when any of us were in need of a boost. He felt our hurts perhaps more than we did.

My grandpa was a very educated, smart man. He was a great person to everybody, and the best grandpa a girl could ask for. He will be missed. Love you, Papa Q.

Paula, My oldest and dearest friend, I am so sorry. Your dad was a very kind and generous man. I will never forget what he did for me years ago. We never would of made it to Arizona without his help. He was a witty man and always made me laugh. I know he must have been so proud of the road you chose in life. Keep your memories alive. I know he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Love, Michelle

The Everts (Colleen, Ed, Kate and Jenny) already miss this wonderful and brilliant man. We spent many Christmas Eves together, discussing our blessings and the issues of the day. I will always remember his mental acuity and his ability to keep people, ideas and things in perspective. We can all recall his “random acts of kindness” and how he made us laugh at ourselves and our foibles. A keen intellect has passed this way. May the angels and saints watch over him.

Sorry to hear of Jim's passing.
"Mr. Quetsch" was my neighbor in West Chicago. He helped me with a legal problem when I was in high school (he would not take payment from me). He was a great man.

Having practiced law in Kane County for more than 25 years, Judge Quetsch is in my mind the quintessential judge. He was always in complete command of his courtroom, and made good decisions. He is the first image I will always have whenever I think of the word "judge". He was also a good guy, and I will miss him.

I am very sorry for your loss. I met "Mr. Quetsch" while I was still in college and he was a judge. He was a bright, engaging person, and his love for the law affirmed my interest in becoming a lawyer. He was also a very giving and caring person, and I have very fond memories of him. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Paula, my heart goes out to you and your family. A life well lived is a great legacy, and I know your dad was very proud of you and your siblings. I hope your memories continue to comfort you through these difficult days and that your smiles become more frequent. You're in my prayers.

Sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I am sorry that I am unable to attend his memorial. I shall remember those many great conversations that we had at the old courthouse in the mornings before court opened.

I was saddened to hear of Jims passing. We were boyhood friends growing up in Oak Park. I have nothing but the fondest memories of our escapades. My deepest sympathy for the family.

My deepest sympathy to all the family. I was his only bailiff and learned so much from him. He was an excellent judge and I enjoyed our many history discussions after the trials. We are in Florida for the winter and regret cannot attend the memorial.

Notre Dame's Class of 1956 will severely miss Jim Quetsch. He was a good friend on Campus in the '50s, and again as a neighbor when I lived in Geneva in the '90s.. and it delighted me the pride he took being a part of our Class. We were pretty proud of him, too1
