Henry Lawrence "Larry" Kappel

Henry Kappel Obituary

Henry Lawrence "Larry" Kappel, 66, faded away peacefully June 14, 2012 at home embraced by family and friends. Larry passed quickly from metastasized esophageal cancer but left those behind with memories of his laughter, goofiness, generosity and wisdom. True to his spirit, his final days were filled with love, laughter, good wine and were without regret. A lifelong White Sox fan and member of a large extended family, Larry was born in Hyde Park to Henry L. and Edith (nee Colosimo) Kappel. A bigger-than-life, gregarious, father-figure, life-coach, and tutor, his abundant sense of humor and unique concern for others touched thousands, and often led to a demand for his stand-up-comedy-like public addresses (flavored with profound insights). Larry married Jane Merydith in 2008 and they spent their time together embracing life, friends and family, and traveling the world. Larry's approach to life experiences and meeting new people are best summed up by his favorite John Fogerty song; Centerfield. "Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes. You know I think it's time to give this game a ride. Just to hit the ball and touch 'em all, a moment in the sun; it's gone and you can tell that one goodbye. Put me in coach - I'm ready to play today." Larry was survived by his wife Jane Merydith; children, David (Mary) Kappel, Megan (Joshua) Fink; step-children, Stephanie (Paul) Moretta, David Chase, grandchildren, Maggie, Patrick, and Bridget Kappel, Karl and Betty Lou Fink, Charlie and Mason Moretta, Devin and Nevaeh Chase; younger brothers, Robert (Claudia), John (Linda), and Bill (Janet) Kappel. He was preceded in death by Elizabeth "Betty" (nee Fitzpatrick) Kappel. A memorial service will be held at West Leyden HS (1000 Wolf Road, Northlake, IL), where Larry taught and coached for over 35 years, on July 15th at 10 am. I am so greatly saddened by his loss. You have no idea how many times I've told stories to my children, family and friends about the best teacher I ever had. I wish all teachers had his gift of humor, patience, and caring. He helped me through a difficult time in my life and I will never forget him. My condolences to his family and close friends. I know all of you have had the greatest loss. He was a wonderful man. I only knew him a short time and he made a huge impact on my life. My thoughts and prayers are with you to see you through this difficult time.

Cousin, I can hardly believe you are gone. Your body is no longer with us, but your spirit will live on in my memory for as long as I am alive. I cherish the time we spent together as young boys. So many memories to hold onto.

So sorry to hear of Larry's passing. Bob and I had such great times with Betty and Larry, going to Sox games and concerts, incuding the Everly Brothers concert that was way too loud and bothered Larry's hearing for some time after. Our condolences to the Kappel family.
P.S. Larry, at least we had 2005 (Go Sox).

You were one of a kind Mr. Kappel. Lots of memories as you stood up in front of the classroom and made our high school years of math so very worth it. With your funny humor and caring ways to your students, I can only imagine what a fun dad to your children and grandpa to your beautiful grandchildren you were.

Valued fellow teacher, a concerned and hard working professional, who reached many, many young (and old) people he dealt with and will be missed by friends (young and old).

I am so sad to hear the news. I feel so bad for losing touch with you. I think of you often when I think of good high school memories. Thank you for empowering me to succeed and to continue to succeed in my professional career. My only regret is that I could not see you at my 20 year reunion and to share my successes with you! May you rest in peace and keep them laughing up there in heaven! Till we meet again!

Saddened to hear the loss of such a funny man! I hated math but you taught me that it wasn't so hard after all with your humor and lightness of the subject. I learned much more than algebra, I learned that fear of the unknown helps no one . Thanks for that. You will be missed, and my deepest condolences go to your family.
