Sorry to hear of Dr. Messmore's passing. I only knew of him recently while doing research on the Messmore family of which I am a decendant. Jacob Messmore Jr of Kewanee was my G-G grandfather. Dr. Messmore sent me som very helpful information.

Please accept my deepest condolences. My name is Filomena Spero. Dr. Messmore treated me close to 30 years ago when I was 22 years old. Following a biopsy of a lymph node, there was a period of 6 months without a diagnosis. It was during that time, Dr. Messmore was called in and asked to take my case. He immediately had his suspicions which later came to be confirmed- Stage 2A Hodgkins Lymphoma. For the following 10 years, after several surgeries and radiation treatment, I was his patient. It was during that time that I came to know, love and respect Dr. Messmore. He was one of a kind and the most passionate, dedicated and intelligent man I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. If you are a survivor, you can understand the anxiety that comes with 3, 6 and 12 month checkups. Dr. Messmore was kind, reassuring and always available for me when it mattered even through the birth of both of my now adult children. I am so very sorry for your loss and for the loss of a great man and had I known sooner, I would have come in person to pay my respects to you. What a legacy he leaves. You must be so proud. I know I will never forget him for the medical and human care he provided me. Prayers of peace to you and your family. Filomena

I worked with Dr Messmore as a nurse in the hematology oncology clinic. He was a kind, compassionate and a Just Plain wonderful physician...Oh, the memories I have of him!!! I guess the most endearing was at Dr Tobin's wake
when I was told his vision prevented him from knowing me--To which Dr Messmore replied, "I'd know that voice anywhere"...There are no words to express my sympathy--the world has lost a very special man and a brilliant physician. Mrs Messmore thank you for sharing him with us!!

My deepest sympathy to you Marilyn and your entire family. No words can ever express the warm feelings all of us in Arthur, Il had for Dr. Harry and his family. He was not only our dr., but our neighbor and friend. You always knew that he would listen no matter how busy he might be. He not only gave a great deal to the medical community, but also to those who called him "friend". May the kind words of his friends and collegues and all of your wonderful memories give you comfort during this difficult time.

I knew Harry at Hines VA Hospital, when we both were staff physicians in the late 1960's. He had a droll sense of humor, and enjoyed telling anecdotes: for example, the time he stopped his car alongside a road in "cowboy country," and another car stopped and a man got out with a camera 'to take a picture of a typical cowboy!'" Harry got a big laugh out of that!

My condolences to you, Mrs. Messmore and your family. Thank you for graciously sharing Dr. Messmore with so many of us over the years. It was November 1981, when I first met Dr. Messmore; I was afraid and lonely after just being given the APML diagnosis. He said, "tonight we'll just be friends, and tomorrow we'll get started with the fight of our lives". From then on, Dr. Messmore was my friend, advocate and physician. In later years, I became aware that Dr. Messmore was actually a brilliant, exceptional and world-renowned clinician and researcher. Although he was grateful for recognition and awards throughout his career. Dr. Messmore remained the same as always: a devoted, sympathetic, selfless, humble, generous and modest physician, mentor and friend. As we all mourn - the angels are rejoicing in song to welcome home a good and faithful servant. Dr. Messmore (Dr. Dad) you will be forever in our hearts.

Dr. Harry will be greatly missed by his fellow WW II Soldiers and members of the US Army, 94th Infantry Division. Dr. Harry had received so many medals and honors for his Military Service in the ETO. He is truly one of the Greatest Generation. I got to know and love Dr. Harry as we met at annual reunions, local 94th Division picnics and luncheons and other 94th Infantry Division events. I salute you Dr. Harry and will miss you dearly. Your family depended on you as well as your medical family.
God Bless you Forever!

Harry, a modest man but an outstanding person. He was an excellent physician but above all a caring doctor. He served as a model and mentor, not only to his students and trainees, but also to his colleagues His distinguished career as first a family doctor,on to the highly regarded Cook County Hospital and Loyola Professor-receiving the Stritch Medal-was lovingly supported by the ever-loyal Marilyn.
My deepest sympathy to the family-we all share in his loss.

Dr. Harry was the most kind and caring person. He worked so hard to save my Sister's life back in 1982. She has survived for all these years and doing well. I have no doubt that if she hadn't had Dr. Messmore looking after her being used so greatly by God she never would have made it. Our hearts are heavy for your loss. He is now in the arms of Jesus! Thank you so much. We loved him too. Sheila Orwat (Kim Kelley's, (Sister)
