Harold passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2014 of natural causes at the age of 92.

He was born on December 3, 1921 in Chicago of John Louis and Hattie (Hospes) Melkus. He was raised in Riverside, IL and a resident of Downers Grove, IL, Elizabeth, IL, and Ellenton, FL.

His first job was as a child when he helped deliver milk to people's doors for the Milkman with his horse and wagon. He later worked for Oakbrook Polo Club tending and exercising the horses. Harold was an avid horseman, sailor, toolmaker, loving husband and father and an all round Mr. Fixit. He worked for International Harvester for over 30 years before retiring as supervisor of the tool room and machine repairs at the Melrose Park plant.

Harold's first marriage was to Grace Helen Swangren on October 28, 1947, which lasted 48 years before Grace's passing. His life was later rejuvenated upon marriage to his 2nd wife, Ella Louise (Wilson) Mech on June 21, 2002.

He is predeceased by his first wife, Grace Helen (Swangren) Melkus; and his two sisters, Grace Elizabeth Likens and Irene Elna Gallt.

He is survived by his second wife, Ella Louise (Wilson Mech) Melkus; his two children, Bruce Neal (Pat) Melkus and Janet Lynn (Charles) Ide. He has 4 grandchildren, Valerie Grace Melkus, Jessica Georgette Melkus, David James Ide and Jeffrey Alan Ide as well as several step children, step grandchildren, and a step great grandchild.

Interment will be at the Oakridge Cemetery, Hillside, IL. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the First United Methodist Church of Downers Grove, IL.
