Florence Schubert Obituary

Florence L. Schubert

Born: March 28, 1924

Died: April 24, 2015

Florence "Flo" Lorraine Schubert, died peacefully in her home. Preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Anna Schubert; half-brother, Hermann; and cousins, Lorraine Schubert and Eleanor Flotte.

Will be dearly missed by her surviving family, including cousins, Eugene, Virginia Whitman, Rev. Gerold and Roger Schubert, and the 24 loving children of her cousins.

Born in Chicago, Florence spent her formative years at the Guardian Angel orphanage in Joliet, before moving back to Chicago. After graduating from beauty school, she enjoyed a long career working at beauty salons on the south-side including Richard's Beauty Salon, the Hair Machine, and Dolph's Beauty Shop. Flo had a kind heart and was always generous to the elderly and underserved. She showed many courtesies to her customers, including visiting their homes to wash or style their hair when they could no longer get to the shop, and she gave many free cuts, colors, and perms to family and friends. Having a flare for fashion, and despite a tight budget, Flo was a model of good taste in attire and decorum throughout her life- her closets overflowing with fashionable clothes and jewelry.

Flo loved children. She spent many "vacations" helping in the homes of newborn nephews/nieces, all of whom remember her fondly. She enjoyed animals, especially the days with her beloved dog "Tinkerbelle" and was quick to agree to care for pets when owners were away from home. She was an election judge for the City of Chicago and supported many local businesses including the Lithuanian Bakery and the historic tavern, the Midget Club.

In 1996 she retired and moved to the Immanuel Senior Residence in Downers Grove to be closer to her family. For 12 years she was responsible for the Catholic Communion Ministry at Immanuel Residence and participated in many activities including Bingo and the Annual Bazaar. She was a member of St Nicholas of Tolentine for many years, and later joined St Joseph Parish when she moved to Downers Grove.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9th at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Downers Grove followed by an interment service at St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park.
